Claremont?

Hi there,

I'm hoping this is an LA county board and not just the city.

We're currently in Bakersfield and are considering a move to Claremont.  My DH is looking at a business there, and I would be looking at teaching jobs if we moved.  DH grew up in the LA area but I'm from NY.  I don't know much about that area in general.  We were there yesterday and it seems really nice.  The city itself looked quiet and well tended.  As we were driving around there weren't any areas where we could say "this isn't a good part of Claremont".

I'm a little concerned about it being a college town.  The Claremont Colleges are so large that I would be concerned that the large amount of students would be disruptive.  There are a lot of apartments around.  Here in Bakersfield there are a few areas I refuse to go on a Friday or Saturday night mainly because of high school students gathering there.  Our CSU campus caters to a lot of commuters so disruption in that area isn't a big issue.

Anything you might have to say for or against the area would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

E

  • I believe there a few girls here who might be able to help you...but I think you will have better luck if you go over to the Inland Empire board.

Best of luck with your move.

  • there is a drastic difference between bakersfield and claremont.

i worked in claremont for several years and we strongly considered moving there at one point. ?it's a really lovely, quiet, quaint town that i don't honestly remember seeing any "ew, i wouldn't go there after dark" parts. ?the school system is highly rated, the neighborhoods are clean and quiet, and although it is a college town, it's not particularly overrun by rowdy students. ?it seems to me that the students there are well-behaved and focused - at least that's the impression i got from walking through the village or eating at the local restaurants. ?i have several friends who grew up in claremont and stayed there after they got married and had kids.

honestly, i don't think you can go wrong with a move to claremont. ?

  • Agree w/ PP.  I grew up in nearby Alta Loma and would move back in an instant (if I wasn't stuck in a house that I couldn't sell!)  It's a very lovely, quiet area and now is built up so much more than when I lived there so there are lots of amenities nearby.  Don't think you can go wrong there.

  • I love claremont, it is a wonderful little town. I live in Upland which is just east of it. If I were going to buy a house there I might stay away from the neighborhoods that border Montclair (south) or Pomona (west). Houses tend to be a bit pricey in Claremont but you really are getting what you pay for great schools, nice parks, and just a wonderful community.

  • Claremont is lovely - the homes there are SO charming :)

I actually do some work for two of the Claremont schools and have spent some time there. Agree w/ pp about the students character... all of the students I have dealt with at these schools seem very mellow - compared to college kids at say a state school etc. The town is quiet and shuts down early (which would be my only complaint) - but that also could be a positive depending on your personality!

  • Hi, I live in Claremont, I have for the last 3 years.  I love it here.  I live in the more modest area of town that borders Pomona, and I have no problems here.  I'd say that for a college town, Claremont is an oddity because everything shuts down at 9!

Good luck with your move.  If you have any questions, just ask!
