New to the board - question regarding trash pick up

Hi Ladies,

We just moved into my first house (rental) in the Tobin Hill area of town (south of Trinity U off of N. St Mary's).  We love our 1928 cottage, but we are dissapointed with how our street handles trash collection.  We take it out the night before our twice weekly pick ups and bring the cans in when we return from work.  Unfortunately our neighbors don't seem to follow these same guidelines.  People leave trash out virtually any day of the week.  When its windy like it has been lately cans will blow all down the street.  It's really frustrating.  I don't want to be the annoying uptight neighbor who just moved in on the street, but I want them to be more attentive.  Apart from being ghetto looking, its a safety issue.

What are your thoughts?  Can I say something?  How should I go about it if I do?

Re: New to the board - question regarding trash pick up

  • Hi!  Regarding trash pick-up, I'd contact the home owners association to see what the policy is.  They can always put reminders in newsletters or on a bill.

  • Welcome to the board! I'd contact your HOA like Kate said. I know ours only allows us to put trash on the street the night before and that's it. Good luck!

  • Our lanlord happens to be the director of our neighborhood association, I wouldn't feel super comfortable bringing it up with her directly - she is so passionate about this transitional neighborhood.  I might send a little anon note to her attention (I'm so waspy and passive aggressive, terrible I know).

I think I'm just used the the life in the burbs, gated communities, keeping up with the jones' etc.  This neighborhood is much funkier - a mix of gorgeous rennovated cottages like ours, and total dumps.  We love it, but its taking some getting used to.

    Thanks for the advice!

  • Tobin Hill is a designated historic district (I believe) and has to abide by the city's historic preservation codes. I found this on the city's website:

    ?

    Trash Receptacles.?

Trash receptacles should blend visually with their surroundings and their?design and location should make use as conv enient as possible.?

Here is the link to the document:

To my knowledge there are a lot of renters in Tobin Hill (not that that's a bad thing) but it does make it harder to enforce some of these code compliance things when its not the property owner.

    ?Good luck!?

  • txdaisygal - you're totally right, it is a designated historic district.  In fact they were just awarded neighborhood of the year by the texas community planning association or something like that.  2 streets west of us is gorgeous - completely remodled consistent neighborhood more like Monte Vista... we live in the more run down part of the neighborhood.

Thanks so much for the city ordinance info - I will be sure to quote that in my wimpy anon note to the neighborhood association. :)
