I posted it on NBC last night/this morning and I'll c&p here because I don't have time to retype. I'm having a good time telling all my students this story...
I got in a yelling match with an old woman in novel class!
OMG, so ridiculous.
If you know me IRL, you would know how improbable this is...I am impossibly shy in situations where I don't know people. BUT this grumpy old woman, who thought she was some kind of expert because she has taken the class before, was being a total bully to me! And raising her voice in a bully-like fashion at me!
So, in a totally uncharacteristic move, I raised my voice right back at her! Several times! And everyone was staring!
Tee hee...it actually felt kinda good. I hate bullies...and I totally like that I have a reputation in class now.
Okay, so here was the situation...
We took a 10 minute break and when break was over we were supposed to make a circle with our row to start workshopping people's manuscripts. It was about 4 minutes into break and this woman starts ordering people around to make the circles. I scooted my desk to start a circle, but no one else in my row was back from break yet, so I was just reading a book and eating some chips.
She comes over to my row and starts moving the desks into a circle (even though she wasn't even sitting in my row and I had already started the circle attempt) and starts demanding, VERY loudly, that I scoot up and join her circle.
I kinda said that I was already starting my circle, but no one else in the row was back yet. She started YELLING that I needed to make the circle, so I raised my voice back at her that no one was there and that I was already moved into a circle-ready position.
THEN she yells, "well, you need to do SOMETHING! You are just SITTING there READING and CHEWING!"
This is when I had had enough, so I yell back at her, "We are on BREAK still. No one else is HERE yet. I have no one to circle with! And WHY ARE YOU YELLING AT ME?!?"
She yells back," BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING!!!"
"WE ARE STILL ON BREAK! STOP TELLING ME WHAT TO DO!"
Haha...it was so ridiculous. She was just old and gross and thought she was some kind of expert because she had taken the class before. So irritating.
Re: I thought you guys might get a kick out of this story...
I would ask her why she's taking it again.
Because, in my book, when you take something again, you failed the first tieme.?
How annoying, indeed.?
ugh! ?i want to throw chips at her just reading this.
but that would be a waste of good chips. ?unless you have some of the crusty brown ones that i never eat. ?or just chip dust. ?that would be better. ?even though i like to tip the bag up and pour them straight into my mouth. ?but it would be fun to watch her shake chip dust out of her stupid blue hair.?
It's a workshop class, so about half of the people in it have taken it at least once. Some like 4 or 5 times. They are workshopping different parts of their novels.
But that doesn't change the fact that she is an annoying old crow. :-

Wow. I'd probably be totally passive aggressive and write her into my novel so the class could read about it.
