I just emailed my dissertation abstract (a two page concise explanation and rational of my research agenda) to my major professor for his review. The task is easier said then done, but it feels so good to have that task behind me. The good thing is that it has forced me to look at my dissertation as a whole and not individual parts (or chapters). If all goes well, my dissertation could just rock the policy theory world off it's feet.
I'm on a natural high right now and wanted to share that with ya'll.
Re: AW: I feel good...
Wow! Congrats! I am sure its a huge load off. I can't wait to put graduate school behind me.
Keep an eye on the PRIZE!

Yey! That's awesome!
Okay, I know I'm probably risking a whole bunch of big words being thrown at me, but:
What is your discertation about? I'm interested!
Thanks for asking!
My dissertation is making the case that policy researchers are failing to advance scientific policy knowledge because of their paradigm (commonly held norms, rules, and values). Thomas Kuhn argues that this knowledge is only advanced if the paradigm shifts. To make this shift happen, you must hold another paradigm up against the current paradigm to show its weaknesses. I am applying critical theory (the other paradigm) to an Everglades policy case study to show what the current paradigm is missing.
Most of the research done in policy is focused on expanding a certain theory, or finding a new way to measure public opinion or organizational behavior. My argument is that while this type of research is needed and useful (especially valued by policy decision makers), it is not advancing the field of policy science as a whole.
I will admit, I needed to look up paradigm LOL
It sounds really interesting, I must say. I'm in a science research field right now and every grant I read sounds exactly the same.
I hope everything works out! Congrats!
Yeah, most of the Ph.D. students take a theory and test it using some data for their dissertation. I'm different because I'm doing theory building instead of testing. So far, so good. Thanks again for asking.
If you are interested in paradigms, I recommend a good fiction book that's a quick read. It's called Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. This book helps you see what a paradigm is and makes you realize that you have one. I read it as an undergrad and it opened my eyes.
