i need help quick! tell me its ugly (even though i could totally refinish it and make it cute!) and probably unsafe.

Save the $30....It could be unsafe or damaged.
you're brilliant. i just googled the make/maufacturer (Simmons?) and recalls immediately popped up. one discussed how the crib can collapse and suffocate babies! horrifying! i might not sleep tonight. this is what i get for even *thinking* about crib shopping at this point....oh karma...

glad you didn't do it. Always check for recalls (although the recalls might not be on all models or years of a particular brand.) Once you are there - things I have found to be good to get on Craigslist or consignment are swings, bouncy seats, bumbos, and excersaucers. Many of these things don't have long use lives (although very important while they are being used!) and they tend to be relatively new.
