Coming to check out Greenville, any advice?
We're starting to think about where we may want to move when DH finishes pharmacy school. We keep saying "a mid-sized city somewhere in the south". Greenville keeps popping up on our radar, so we're going to take a long weekend and come check it out. We've been googling and looking at visitors guides and such, but still don't really feel like we have a good idea of the areas of town, places we should go to get a feel for Greenville, etc. Any recommendations about "must-sees" while we're there, places to check out, hotels, etc. would be appreciated. Or just opinions about what you think of Greenville! Thanks!
Re: Coming to check out Greenville, any advice?
Downtown's a must see!!! There's an area called Falls Park right before you get to the "west end" which is absolutely beautiful. the West End is a more artsy area of Downtown.
There are a bunch of us living in the Simpsonville area- it's a great suburb that's only about 15-20 minutes from the actual "downtown" area of Greenville. Along with Simpsonville, there are a # of suburbs that would be great to explore on a long weekend. :-)
As far as restaurant recommendations,Downtown, I'd recommend Soby's Trio, and, if you're looking for something more casual, the Corner Pocket.Outside of downtown, I'd go for Mimi's Cafe or MiMi's Japanese Steakhouse. Tehre's also Canyon River and Saskatoons if you're feeling adventurous. If you're looking for a hotel in the heart of downtown, I'd go for the Westin Pointsett or the Hyatt. If you're looking for something a little bit outside of Greenville proper, there's Holiday Inn and Hilton or Hampton Inn within about 10 minutes of that area.
Where are you all moving from? DH and I moved from Charlotte NC 2 years ago and we love it here. Good luck with your search and please don't hesitate to ask if you have other questions!!!
DH and I lived in Charlotte for about 10 years-9 of that was before we met-and we both love Greenville. He's from Raleigh, and I've lived a few places in the South-small towns and bigger cities, but regardless, Greenville's just the right mix of that for both of us. We're only about an hour and a 1/2 from Charlotte, so it's not a big deal at all to head up that way for a weekend visit or even just a day.
Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm sure any of the G'ville area nesties would be more than happy to help you.
I totally second Mrs. D. We love it here. DH and I moved here from DC and moving here was the best decision we ever made. I live in Simpsonville in the Five Forks area (Near Mrs. D). It's a great location for us because it's in a good school district (Simpsonville schools are generally better than Greenville schools) and it's still close to the commerce on Woodruff Road.
What are some of the things you enjoy in the area where you live now? That may help us recommend things to look at here. You do absolutely have to go to Falls Park one day. It's a beautiful park in the heart of greenville. Pick a nice day and plan to walk around for a few hours and check out the shops downtown while you're there. Our favorite place to go for lunch is Marys at Falls Cottage and it overlooks falls park. It's only open till 2 though. http://www.fallscottage.com/site/Home.html
The West End is a neat place too. The opening game for our baseball team, the Greenville Drive (a farm team for the Red Sox) is April 9th. Tickets are inexpensive and the field is adorable! Even if the season hasn't started when you visit, go check out the area. There are cute bars etc all around the field, giftshops, and you can see through the fence to the field. http://www.greenvilledrive.com/
If you're looking for commerce, there is the Haywood Mall, which is the largest mall in SC. http://www.simon.com/mall/default.aspx?id=206
Also, head to Woodruff Road which is where most of the stand-alone stores are (stores not found in the mall). There are many plazas, shopping centers, and various other restaurants etc there.
If you are into the arts, there is the Greenville Little Theater, and the Peace Center which both offer live theater options, musical theater, the symphony (peace center only), etc.
If you like going to rock concerts, etc, you may be interested in the bilo center. They host major concerts, sporting events, etc. http://www.bilocenter.com/events.html
Let us know more about what all you are interested in. There are nice parks, forests, etc if you're outdoorsy people. If you are religous there are SOOOO many churches, you'd be sure to find one you loved. If you love the arts, there is no shortage of venues and events. If you like nightlife, there's generally always something going on downtown, etc.
Oh and I just thought I'd mention, if you or your DH are interested in jobs at the Greenville Hospital System, send me a PM with your e-mail address and I'll have my DH send you an employee referral.
We may have to move to Greenville just for the nice nesties! Thanks for all the suggestions already. We're not really "going out" people when it comes to nightlife, but I also don't like places where the whole town shuts down at 9pm. I love live music and theater (went to a performing arts high school, so the arts are important to me). I also love to shop, especially those non-mall, non-chain places (although I do love me some JCrew and Banana Republic). I'd love to find some sort of community choir and get back into singing again. DH is into sports, and I'm excited to see that there's a baseball team. We love going to games, and I miss that about where we live right now. We like to eat out a lot, and enjoy the outdoors, although we're more likely to go for a jog in the park than go hike in the forest. We actually met at church in college, so finding a church (most likely Methodist) is definitely important to us.
DH is about to start his clinical rotations in the hospital (thus far he's only done retail), so time will tell what type of job he's going to look for. MrsZP2B, I can't figure out how to send a private message (I assume that's what PM stands for), but I'd love your e-mail address to hold onto in case DH decides he does want to work in a hospital. I'm not sure whether I'm going to be looking for work right away or not (depends on how the baby-making situation turns out in the near future), but I'm a speech-language pathologist and eventually will probably be looking for a part time job. I've worked in elementary schools for the last four years and am really interested in getting into some more early intervention.
Again, thanks so much for your help! It's making me really excited to come up there and check out the area!
No problem! We've just been in Greenville since October of 07, but we absolutely love it. I've not met many people who live here and just can't wait to leave you know? It seems like a place where people are really happy with their community.
My e-mail address is my full name so I'm not big on handing it out here, but look right under this post on the bottom right. It should say "Contact+" click that, and then there should be an option like... "send a private message to MrsZP2B."
You don't have to do that right now though, I will send you a PM now with my e-mail address. To check your PMs (they don't send e-mail notices anymore,) just check over in the left column. There is a header toward the bottom that says "My boards" and under that there is a link that says "Check Private Messages."
Hope this helps!
Oh and this is the church we go to and we love it!

Obviously everyone has different things they look for in a church and I'm certainly not trying to push it. It's unlike any church we've ever attended, but we are so happy there. If you ever want to visit Grace, let us know and we'll show you around!
