heating costs

If you don't mind me asking, how much do your monthly heating costs run? I'm interested in natural gas heated homes. I was going to ask the buying a home or money matters boards, but I figured I'd get more accurate numbers here on the local board.

Re: heating costs

  • Of course it will depend on how hot you keep your house and how big it is, etc.  We have natural gas.  We have a two bedroom home and during the day it is at 65 and when we are home it is more like 70.  We are on a balanced billing plan and pay $82 a month.  Every 6 months they reassess and change your bill amount if it is needed.  We are generally right around that and usually don't end up paying extra at the end of the 6 months.
  • I have a 3 bedroom home with a finished basement.  It is just a little more then 1 year old so it has pretty good insulation and windows and such.  We have paid between 150-200 per month during the winter months Dec-Feb.  November and March I think were around 130 and 35 in the summer.  Our hot water runs off the natural gas as well.
  • Hi Mary,

I am an REA in the Bedford area, and it has been my experience that heating cost will vary depending on the size, style, and structure (i.e. insulation, etc) of the home.  If you ask a heating professional, there is no exact formula for determining which heat source is better (gas or oil...or even pellet/wood).  With that said though, the best explanation you will receive is going to be from that same person...the hvac expert.  If you want, I have a really great contact in the profession that would be more than happy to provide some very useful education on this topic.  He owns Paradigm Plumbing and Heating in Hooksett.
