Last min - boston wedding? Help!

Hey guys,

Quick question to see if this is possible.  My wife and I got married back in July in Scotland where my wife is from.  We are currently living in the US, North Carolina for a few years while my wife is teaching here.  Our original anniversary is coming up in the next few weeks and I was thinking we might be able to go up to Mass and get our marriage certificate in the USA for our anniversary.  Can you just go up to Mass walk into the justice of the peace office and get married in a day?  Are they open on a Saturday as we can only go up on the weekend?  Honestly just looking to go up and sign the paperwork and that is it. We already had the fab wedding back in July so it is really just to do it in the States as well.

Thanks in advance you guys are great!!

 Kathy x

  • There is a waiting period...I can't recall off hand...3 days maybe??  Also, they might not allow you to, if you already have a valid marriage.  And since MA recognizes same-sex marriages from other countries they might consider you already married.  Call a city clerk (Provincetown, MA is very helpful) and ask specifics.

  • Good advice.  I will call and find out - thanks alot!  I just thought it would be a nice romantic things to do.

  • I second TwoTrue - call the PTown city clerk, it is possible that since you're already married, you won't be able to get a MA license.

There is a waiting period here in MA, and it is 3 days.  So you'll need to be in town for 3-4 days. You fill out the paperwork one day, and they tell you when you can come back (3 days later) to pick it up.  Then you exchange vows with a JP/officiant/etc, who signs it.  After the ceremony, the license needs to be sent back to the city clerk (our officiant took care of that, so I don't know if it needs to be delivered in person or can be mailed), and then it is processed and your license is mailed to you.

I also don't know that JPs are available at clerks offices.  It's my understanding that in MA, you have to find someone on your own, but that is something else you can find out from the clerk.

As for when the offices are open - it is different at every one.  Cambridge (near Boston), Provincetown (all the way at the end of Cape Cod), and Northhampton (western MA) are all good choices because they are very gay-friendly and will be most likely to be helpful.  You can google "[town name] city clerk" to find each one's website, which will list the hours they are open.  Most clerks are only open during the week, but some do have Saturday hours.

    Good luck!
