Best book you've read lately?

OK ladies, so at 27 years old, I've discovered this amazing little pastime - READING.

I know this sounds crazy.  I've hated reading my entire life, but for some unexplained reason about a month ago I picked up the first Harry Potter book (I bought a boxed set of the first 4 the summer I lived in London). I have read the first 4 already and have started the 5th and I've already bought the 6th.

Now the last 3 books (the one I'm reading, and the final 2) are LONG so it'll take me a while to get through them, but I was wondering if any of you have any suggestions for other easy-reads that I may enjoy when I'm through with this children's series haha.  I think I like it soo much because it isn't too deep or anything.  My husband has quite a collection of books, but he reads stuff by the great philosophers, or most recently he read the Canterbury tales.  That is NOT my kind of reading.

So any of you? Suggestions?  Do you think I'd Twilight?

Re: Best book you've read lately?

  • I haven't read the Twilight series, so I can't comment on that, but I've been making my way through the Lemony Snicket series (A Series of Unfortunate Events).  I like them because they're nice and short, so I feel like I've accomplished something!

I'm totally blanking on the other books I've read lately.  I get a lot of magazines in the mail, so I've been trying to catch up on reading them.

  • I LOVE Nicholas Sparks books-granted they're based in NC, mostly along the coast or in the Raleigh/Chapel Hill area, but they're just easy to get lost in-I read one of his newest, "The Lucky One" this past summer and it was sooo great!!!!
Other than that, I read things by F Scott Fitzgerald or Hemmingway, etc.

  • I jumped on the Twilight bandwagon and I bet you would love them. Easy to read and they keep you engaged. I also love Judy Picoult. Try My sister's keeper..it is amazing. I love to read and do so constantly so if you need a rec, I'm here!
  • I'm visiting...but I love books!

I'm going through a historical fiction phase due to Phillipa Gregory.  She wrote The other Boelyn Girl, which was made into a movie...a year or two ago.  She has books on three more of King Henry VIII wives, and on Queen Elizabeth.  All of those were great if you like history with a dramatic twist.

My top fave is the Time Travelers Wife.  Its about a man who randomly travels throught time and often visits his wife as a child.  Its an intriguing look at relationships and how they change over time.

    Enjoy!

  • Canterbury Tales?!   I think I read that in high school and only high school.

I am almost done with the Twilight Series.  I think you would like it. The books are long though FYI.

I've also started reading James Patterson (thanks Mom).  I really like the "Womens Murder Club" series.  I am on book 3 of 7.   I have all 7 (thanks again Mom).

I also recently read Nicholas Sparks and think he is pretty good.

you should post on the Book Club boards, you'll get lots of suggestions there.

  • I am a total nerdy book worm and read about 1 book a week. Twilight was a fun easy read. Easy to get into, try them out.

I just finished The Art of Racing in the Rain and loved it. It is told from a dogs prespective and a few parts made me laugh really hard. Along those lines, Marley and Me is a good one.

James Patterson is a good easy read about dectives. Patricia Cornwell has a good series about a medical examiner and don't worry, they don't get gross. (I love Kay Scarpetta, the main gal!). Target has a reading program that typically has really good ones on it as well.

  • You will enjoy Twilight. You have to remember the books are geared towards young adults- but they are fantastic books. I recently read all 4 books and I just re-read them again.

Once you bite the Twilight bug there is no going back Smile

  • I also jumped on the Twilight bandwagon. Fun, easy read.  I 2nd Jody Piccoult - great writing style. My other recent favs include Mitch Albom's books, Marley & Me, and the Secret Life of Bees.
  • MargotMck, I'm in the middle of The Art of Racing in the Rain and I've loved it so far!!! I kind of think I know how it will end, but I still want to keep reading.
I have to say, while I do like Nicholas Sparks, one book of his that I won't be able to read again is The Guardian-I had a hard time with the way it ended-I REALLY get into what I'm reading so it hit me hard.

I think the next book I'm going to read will be either Marley and Me or John Grisham's the Innocent Man-two very different genre's but I've heard really good things about both.

    Big Smile
