AW - Finished Couch to 5K Today!
DH and I finally completed the last run in the Couch to 5K program today, and I just had to AW a little.
We started in October, and neither of us had any running experience at all. We got a little off-track around the holidays and had to repeat a few weeks, so it took us longer than nine weeks, but still, it's been quite a transformation in just a few months. I'm really enjoying it and plan to keep running.
Anyways, just wanted to share and, especially, to thank everyone who recommended the program in the first place. It's really been great.
Re: AW - Finished Couch to 5K Today!
That's right. We did the timed version, so we're up to running 30 minutes but we're not fast, so we're still running a little less than 5K. I'm guessing we're at about 2.8 miles right now. I think on Sunday, I'm going to add five minutes to my run and see if I can do the full 5K.
Scheduled IVF for April 2013--SURPRISE, don't need it! EDD 9/6/13
Not sure yet. I think I want to get some 5Ks under my belt before I sign up for a longer race, but I kinda like being on a program, too.
My husband seemes daunted by the idea of a half-marathon, so I think I might start looking for a 10K program for novices. I need to look around some though because even some of the 10K programs start at a level above where I am now.
At first, I used the podcasts (there are several versions), which announce each time it's time to change speed. After it got simpler, I downloaded an interval timer app from iTunes. The one I downloaded is crappy, but the concept is good, so I'll probably download a better one soon.
Congrats! Please tell me is this a training program you go to or a book, something online? Wondering how this works. I had wantesd to join one of the running clubs that offer them but the times did not work out for me.
Check out www.c25K.com. It has a link to a copy of the original training program, as well as links to a lot of the other resources available.
Basically, you can complete the program based on distances or times. If you're on a treadmill, you can track either one pretty easily. If you're running outdoors, you may find it easier to track times. There are free podcasts you can download that will cue you when to alternate between running and walking or, if you prefer, you can use some kind of a timer or your watch to track it. I used the podcasts for the early weeks where you do a lot of short intervals. Once I got to the longer runs (i.e. 20 minutes or longer), I decided I'd rather listen to my own music and time it myself.
You might also check out the Health & Fitness board here on the Nest. There is a daily C25K/Running Training check-in thread, where you can post where you're at in the program and see where other folks are in their training program. If you like the accountability of a group, but want to do the workouts on your own, this may be a good balance.
GL with your training!
