Neighborhood Info.. Places to avoid?

Hi ladies!

My DH and I are currently living in the Northeast (RI) and are potentially moving to San Antonio in the next couple months due to a job relocation.I would be working at the Kindred Hospital on Medical Drive, wondering if you could recommend any nice areas and any areas that we should avoid when looking for apartments. We would prefer to be in a area with lots of outdoor activities and dog friendly places (We have 2 dogs). I would not mind commuting up to 40 minutes if it would put us in a better area. Also neither one of us have EVER been to Texas so any info or advice you have would be great! Look forward to hearing from you. TIA!

Re: Neighborhood Info.. Places to avoid?

  • FYI: A 40 minute commute doesn't necessarily get you very far in SA! I know where Kindred Hospital is and there are a lot of nice neighborhoods in that area. The Medical Center area is good (and ideal since that's where you will work) and most anywhere NW of that. The 281/1604 area is also a nice area, but depending on where you choose to live, that could really take a lot of time to get to work. There's a lot of new apartments that have been built on 1604 that are definitely within your driving distance. You really have a lot of options though, so don't worry too much! SA is practically the size of RI, so you'll definitely find a place to live!

As far as Texas advice, throw out your snow equipment because you will only need it once every 20 years and even when it snows, the entire city will shut down. :) Oh, and we really, really, really like Mexican food.

     And margaritas.

  • There are LOTS of nice apartments in the med center area, so you shouldn't have any problems. ?I would be a little harder if you were looking to buy a house though. =P ?Save the commuting to go to outside of town for the weekends to enjoy the great outdoors - it surrounds this City! ?There are quite a few outdoor activities, but it is the ultimate irony because San Antonio IS NOT pedestrian friendly (so be prepared to pack up your dogs for a drive)

Wait until you see what kind of place you can get for HALF the cost of an apartment in RI! ?You will fall in love! Call up any of the apartment locator places here - tell them what you want and they will help you a TON. ?It is free - they get a kickback from whatever apartment you end up renting from.

Just so you know, San Antonio lies within Bexar County. ?It is pronounced "bear". =)?

  • Thanks for all the info. I am amazed at what we could afford in Texas versus Rhode Island, my salary would actually be increasing with the move and our expenses would most likely go down. Seems like a win win situation. Do you have any recs for reputable apartment locators? I have been checking craigslist, but I am a little weary... Thanks again!

  • Here is a link to real estate search:

We live on the NW side of town b/c DH works at University Med Center.  We live in a house and love this area.  There are tons of apartments around here, but if you can afford to buy or rent a house, I'd do that.  But I'm not a fan of apartment living.....

  • Hi!  I just private messaged you but I'd love to help you whenever you have more exact move dates.  You will love TX.  There are a ton of great areas around Kindred!
  • There are tons of apartments EVERYWHERE. We just moved out of San Antonio and into Boerne.  I am not a fan of apt living, but I have to make due. I was not a fan of a million apartment complexes within a few miles of each other, so that is why we moved to Boerne. We have a cute townhome and it is animal friendly. I commute to a downtown hospital from the northest part of Boerne and it takes me 30-35 mins, I pass Kindred, I am also doing this during non rush hour hours.  I am assuming you are in the medical field, make sure you mention this, I got some good discounts/fees waived when I mentioned this while apt shopping. There are a few apartments on 1604 that I would also consider since they are spaced out from the next complex.  Make sure you stay away from the UTSA apartments and area. I  personally would watch where you look in the medical center, some of the areas are crime riddened, I just graduated from school over there, so friends have told me their horror stories. Since I just moved from one apt to another and looked around you can email me if you would like....lil24leigh@hotmail.com, good luck and welcome!!
  • IMO, 40 minutes doesn't get you very far only if you live in Stone Oak (far north central - north of 1604 on 281), or out near Alamo Ranch (far northwest - north of 1604 near I-90).

From where I live (castle Hills) I can practically be in New Braunfels in 40 minutes. It takes me 15 minute to get downtown for work. It would take me 45 min - 1 hour if I lived north of 1604. So, your commute times definitely vary depending on where you live.

I would avoid the apt. complexes actually ON medical drive. Medical is a very busy street and I think it could be very hard to turn onto medical from some of those complexes. There are a couple of nice places at Wurzbach & 10 that would work for you. There is also a nice apt. complex at Camp Bullis & I-10 that would be about a 15 minute commute to Kindred. Its also right near a bunch of great shopping, restaurants, & entertainment and could be a great location for you as you adjust to life in SA.

  • Hey! I'm from RI too.. Went to Mount, my parents live in Narragansett now:) We are down here for DH's residency at BAMC (can't wait to get back to NE one day).

I would check out the Marquis at Rogers Ranch or Huebner Road. They are nice apartments and not badly priced (especially compared to places in NE).

They are close to the Medical Area, but are located close to good shopping and food.

  • I work about .5 mile from Kindred and I can drive out to Helotes where I live in less than that in traffic so you have plenty of options!

Where will your husband be? That will be super important.

Look at this site http://www.sirleasealot.com/search.aspx.  Contact Deborah Carter 210.757.4644 she is an awesome locater and it won't cost you a penny.

     Good luck!
