Blair is refusing to nurse!

I hope it's just a phase. She only gets the occassional bottle of breastmilk, like when I go to the office on Wednesday mornings, or if I'm running errands and DH is home with her. It's maybe 3 bottles a week --so I don't pump very often.

But on Friday she nursed, but reluctantly, all day. Her Grandma gave her bottle that day, too. On Saturday she nursed twice, and refused to do it again through the afternoon and evening, so DH had to give her a bottle twice. She did it again yesterday, only nursing when she woke up, and later in the morning. She refused it the rest of the day, so we had to give her a bottle again. This morning, she just said no, and I had to give her a bottle.

I'm not really sure what to do. I've been pumping like a mad woman to ensure there is enough milk for her, and she's having three small meals of solids a day (usually cereal and fruit or a veggie). I'm worried that if she keeps this up, she might not get enough calories or fluids. We aren't going to give her formula, but are 3-4 bottles of milk (5-6 oz) enough per day?

And, is it common for babies to wean themselves from the breast? My mom said I did it at this age, that i just stopped nursing all of a sudden. My mom didn't say if she pumped or supplemented with formula, but I certainly don't think Blair is ready to eliminate the milk for solids yet. She's only just figuring out what to do with the cereal puffs!

Any advice? (off I go to pump, again) Thanks much ladies!

Re: Blair is refusing to nurse!

  • Are there any distractions in the area when you are nursing...even the TV?  It's possible that could be a problem.  Or, what something that may have changed in your diet, that could be transferring to Blair and causing an allergic reaction?  Does she happen to have a cold or stuffy nose?  Maybe an ear infection...all of these things could be factors.

But, I have also heard that some babies just wean themselves and unfortunately, we aren't quite ready for that and so it's harder on us than them.  Personally, I would try looking into everything before concluding that she is weaning herself.  Even try nursing her in a different position or a different place.

    Good luck...

  • She's probably just going through a phase. These little people are always changing. I would just keep offering to her and go to www.kellymom.com for ideas and tips. They have a great forum as well. GL!

  • She might be going through a phase.  Jake went through this too.  I just kept offering him to nurse.  After a few days, he was back to normal.

Also, when babies start to have more solids, sometimes (not always) they don't want to drink as much as they used to.
