Any of the Hyatts vs any Marriotts downtown?

We have $200 to use towards either any of these properties. Any reason for chosing one over the other?  I would love the Park Hyatt - but is it worth it?  its pricey! even with the certif (we're going for 2 nights.  At 600 for two  nights, even getting to 400 for the two nights leave me slightly itchy. We'd rather drop major money on food and drinks, which if you recommend, I'd gladly accept).  We love trendy food places which don't necessarily mean (at least in Philly ) that the guests are all "the beautiful" people .  We love dives and must-haves.  We prefer bars/pubs over clubs.  We'll be there march 28 - 20 .

Thank in advance for your help.

Re: Any of the Hyatts vs any Marriotts downtown?

  • I don't think the Park Hyatt is worth it...       but my ILs come to Chicago all the time, and they are Marriott freaks because the get points.    So I'm pretty familiar with most of their Chicago properties.      Of all of them, the Renaissance at Dearborn and Wacker is my favorite.   It is beautiful, with a nice bar area and a central location (walkable to the Mag Mile and the Loop/Millennium Park).       The Marriott on Michigan is also nice, but it can be a bit of a zoo.   It is always bustling.   But the rooms are nice and you can't beat the location right on Michigan Ave.

The Blackstone on S. Michigan is really nice, swanky, trendy, but depending on what you want do to, it is kinda out of the way.

and there's always the Hyatt Regency, but it isn't my favorite.   Talk about a zoo... it is HUGE and feels like a small city inside.   The location is great, but I've never been impressed by the hotel.

  • we could do the Renaissance for $200 for the two nights

or the Hyatt Regency for $100 for the two nights...

what property would you pick?  In other words, is the Ren worth an extra $100 or would we do better to keep that loot in our booze/food kitty and we will be absolutely fine at the Hyatt?

Oooh... that's a tough call.     I'd probably have to go for the Hyatt Regency, but that is because dining out is pretty much my most favorite thing in the world, and I'd want as much of my budget as possible to go towards food and booze.    :-)    The location of the regency is great, it just feels a bit overwhelming because of how huge it is.    The regency does, however, have a fun bar...  i think it is known for being the longest bar in the country?   its huge!

  • dude, I've heard about your bio (it's legendary!) and I am resisting looking since lodging is the first step !  Once that is nailed down, sister, I am all over your bio!

and good, we wont'  die at the Hyatt Regency.    done deal.

  • the update, since you are dying to know:

We could spend $173, total, for two nights at the Renaissance and $74 total, for two nights at the Blackstone (i saw the words swanky and trendy, either of which I am...but I like them in a hotel) (I nixed the Hyatt because you said the Ren was better and it turned out, today to be same price).

So, knowing those prices, NOW what would you choose? Ren over Blackstone?

Note: we aren't afraid of a walk or cabs if we need it to get to Blackstone.

Honestly, I am such a jerk to be pestering you with all of this because I don't even know where all the action goes down (where are the best restaus, neighborhoods,  where is a good spot for a little pub hopping). In other words, I haven't done all my homework and I seem like I want you to do it for me. Forgive?

  • well....   gosh.      you're really deciding based on location.   The Blackstone is in South Loop.    You'll have plenty of access to cabs, but it is a good mile from the heart of the loop (think the Art Institute), and therefore 2 miles from the heart of Michigan Ave.    But the hotel is very fun, and the spanish restaurant (oh, its in my bio!) is excellent.   and the first floor bar there has REALLY tasty drinks and desserts.

The Ren is nice, classy, quiet, and well located.   It puts most of the fun Chicago stuff within walking distance.

So...  my thinking is that it might still be cheaper to stay at the swanky, trendy Blackstone, and use cabs when you need them, rather than stay at the Ren.     Does that make sense?     Taxis are plentiful down there, and I could recommend some good South Loop restaurants for you (that was my old stomping grounds).     but you really will probably end up taking cabs to most things you want to do.      OR, you can just pay cash to ride the CTA Bus (the #3 runs right up Michigan Ave and drops you off less than a block from the Blackstone).    If having more money for eats and drinks is important... I'd do the Blackstone.   But do know that it isn't in the heart of fun-stuff-to-do.

    Is that at all helpful?

Not a jerk.   no need for forgiveness.    You told me my bio was legendary...    lmao!     a comment like that forgives all sins.    ;-)
