License or registration - which first?

I moved a few weeks ago to Memphis from NY and we need to register our cars and get new drivers licenses. I've looked all over the websites and of course no one answers the phone numbers, so I was wondering if any of you knew if we had to do one first. I'd hate to go get a new license only to be told I need to register the car first, and vice versa. TIA!

  • License. ?You need to be a legal resident of whatever county you are in before you can register your car there.

that's not true. We just got our licenses changed over in June of 2007 and have lived here since December 2005 with having our cars registered in both Davidson County at first and then Maury county before we got TN licenses.

I'm sure you CAN do it by getting your license first, but you can definitely do it the other way.

  • I did my cars first partly because I wanted to get rid of my Mass plates so I could cancel my Mass car insurance. I didn't get a license until I had been here a couple mos because that actually took more time than getting my registration.?
  • oh and check to see if you need to get your emissions tested before you change your registration. I know you do in WIlliamson nad Davidson Counties, but some counties don't require it
