Cost of living?

Hi ladies,

I posted a while ago about possibly moving to Clemson (thanks so much to the ladies who helped answer my questions!). My husband just received his financial offer from Clemson, and he seems pretty happy with the number...and I'm terrified. We currently live in Boston, so I understand that COL is higher here, but I'm still nervous. We wanted to buy a house (something small) in the Clemson area, and now I'm not so sure we can do that (obviously, we need to do a lot more talking about this whole issue).

Here's my question...is it reasonable for us (we don't have kids yet) to live on $40-50k a year in that area? I don't have a job lined up in SC yet, and I'm nervous about that too...but I just want to know if our expected (combined) income will be completely unreasonable.

Thanks!

Re: Cost of living?

  • DH and I make a little less than that a year and we don't have any problems making ends meet.  However, we are renting.  We're originally from the Washington D.C. area and the housing prices down here seem pretty low to me.  The only obstacle to owning a house would be having enough saved money for a down payment, imo.

I know that there are websites that allow you to compare the costs of living in different areas; they should be easily searched through google, etc.  You could also get on different realty sites to see they typical costs of homes in this area.

    Good luck!

  • I think it depends on your lifestyle. How large a home you would want etc.Have you tested the market for the type of homes you would want? I think groceries and utilities will definitely be cheaper. I don't think you will have any problems. GL

  • You can definitely live on 40-50k a year in Clemson.

COL is much more reasonable than where you're coming from and H's and my budget has us living on about that much.   We bought a really cheap house which helps but we also spend very little on entertainment because we mostly do things outdoors or that the university offers.

I'm not sure if I offered this before, but I'm actually a Realtor in the Clemson area and would be glad to show you rentals and/or homes in the area if you're interested.

Just shoot me an email .... lholmeswillis@coldwellbankercaine.com and I'll be glad to send you listings or help with any other information.

Oh, and you'll LOVE Clemson.  I spent my 4 years there and then was never able to leave :)

  • Whew, that's good to know :) $40-50k is based on me finding a job, of course, but I'm hoping that won't be too unreasonable. I think I just got really nervous when I heard his package...it wouldn't get us anywhere in Boston!!

As for finding a home...we've looked a little into home prices, and we'll probably be able to swing it. We have money saved now, so I'm not too worried about the DP. We also don't mind something that's a bit of a fixer, as DH loves projects (and I don't mind them either).

I'm just glad that we're not totally being ridiculous.

Lauren, thanks for the offer! I'll probably be in touch :)

  • I'll just chime in and say that you can certainly live in that area on that budget and afford a modest home and live a decent lifestyle.

  • You can definitely do it- it won't give you an extravagant lifestyle, but I echo pretty much everything the other ladies said :)

  • it can be done for sure. Just make sure that you work out a budget. IF you don't end up buying right away, there are always tons of rental houses in Clemson/Anderson.

    Good luck with the move!

  • Thanks ladies :) It's official...DH accepted the offer from Clemson today, so we'll be moving in July! I'm both excited and nervous.
