charleston, Myrtle beach, or other

DH and I are planning a family vacation (SIL, bro, niece, mom, and dad).  We're trying to decide between Charleston, Myrtle Beach, or a lake near a popular area.  We're looking for somewhere we can go to the beach/lake but also has other things to do.  My dad has MS and doesn't walk well so needs to be easy access and not too much walking.  Which do you think would be best?  Can you tell me a town or lake to look into?  Can you tell me fun things to do in each area?  TIA

Re: charleston, Myrtle beach, or other

  • Charleston has a lot to do, unfortunately, a lot of it could involve walking, like the open air market downtown, or going down king street, or the beach.  However, there are beaches very close to downtown and a lot of fun stuff that you all could do too, like carriage rides through the historic area or I think that there are also water tours on the water around downtown (I think harbor tours).  Charleston definately offers a lot as far as things to do.

  • I think Charleston or Myrtle Beach both would probably involve some walking, but it seems like the newer places in MB are becoming increasingly handicapped accessible.  My father has trouble walking as well.  He did pretty well at MB with a scooter last 4th of July.  If your father doesn't have one, I'd suggest looking in to renting one for vacation wherever you decide to go.  My dad doesn't use one on a daily basis, but we always rent one on vacation for him.

Also,  if you do stay at a resort on a beach, ask if the beach is handicapped accessable.  It made it really hard for my dad to actually get to the beach because there were a lot of stairs that went up and over a grassy dune/embankment thing at the hotel we stayed at most recently at the beach.
