name change question

ok, i am going to start looking into the process of changing my name. i am a bit confused about something, and would like to see if i can get this cleared up...

when i applied with DH for our marriage license, i applied as my maiden name, and whatnot. on the marriage certificate, and online, it shows my maiden name...

my question is... when i start the process, i fill the information out as Mrs. R, instead of Mrs. P, and provide the marriage cert. as proof of change, right? how does this work?

thanks a million, ladies!!! :)

Re: name change question

  • You need to start off with two things, your Drivers License and your Social Security Card. Make an appointment at both offices. Bring your marriage certificate with you (If you want to bring more forms of ID a passport or birthcertificate is good too). They will simply ask you, how you want your name to appear, I told them I want the same last name as the guy on the certificate! LOL

Once you get the new SS card take it to HR at your job so they can change your tax information and make sure that doesn't get all screwy. From there, proceed to change everything from your insurance, credit cards, make a list.

It helps if you have 2 copies of the certificate just incase you misplace one.

  • Cool. I am going to request another copy so that I have it already... I plan to change it when I have a little time off from work. :)

     Thank you so much!!!!

  • ok... one more thing... if i want to add my religious middle name (given to me at my confirmation) can i do that? i plan to use my middle name with my new last name as my stage name (for opera), and wanted to have it tied to my name legally...
  • This is a little tricky because I've seen complaints from girls that they want to change their middle name too in the case of making their maiden name their middle name and then taking their husbands last name. Some say the DL's office didn't let them do that, others say that they didn't have a problem. If I were you, call your DL's office and/or SS office first and find out if you can change your middle name.
  • I am going to leave the middle name portion blank... but when I go in, I will ask whoever is helping me, if I can add it in. If not, no biggie... :)

    Thanks for all your help!!!

  • I think for name changes that are not supported by a legal document, you may have to go before a judge and explain why you want to change your name to that specific thing. I guess this is to avoid people being able to change their names whenever they want on a whim for no good reason (or for a bad reason, like trying to hide something). Do you have your Confirmation certificate? It's a long shot, but maybe if you show the person at the Social Security office that, they might be willing to put it in for you without the need for a separate hearing.

  • true... i don't know if I have that somewhere... i had to request the baptism one, but they just stamped the back with the other 2 ceremonies (communion and confirmation), so no record of the name thing. I will just wait, and ask... if not, it's not a big deal... it's not like i legally have to have a name to use it at a stage name. :)
