How has the economy affected you?

We are basically just eating out less b/c I'm on reduced work weeks.

I'm wondering how other s.carolineans are affected.

Re: How has the economy affected you?

  • I've taken a 15% paycut.  DH actually found his job after things started going bad with the economy, so we still have more expendable income than we did before the economy started to tank.

Since we bought our home though, we've pretty much stopped eating out.  We used to eat out all the time when we lived in an apt and had a tiny kitchen, so we're saving a ton of money that way.  Also, DH takes his lunch to work with him which saves a considerable amount.

I would say because of the state of the economy, we are trying harder than ever to save money, in case one of us should get laid off.

  • My work is much slower.  DH is lucky that he was so expensive to his company (they pay for his grad school) that he's not likely to be let go even if GE does layoff (which they haven't yet).

And we too eat out way less.

But, as a positive, we're looking into building our dream house because of the low rates and construction costs.

  • The economy has actually made my job take off (I build multi-family), because people aren't buying at the moment, so they are renting. On the other hand, DH's work has slowed (for the same reason that mine picked up). We are being aware of what we spend though and are trying to save a bit more

  • We haven't really been effected.  I work in a job that thrives in this economy (I don't get paid more though), and DH's job is steady.  We have been steadily trying to pay off bills and pay off debt though, so we have been cutting back.

for future reference, since I'm on the chopping block, what job thrives in this economy?  You don't have to be too specific, but I would love a clue.

  • Being a poor graduate student has it's perks!  I can't make much less than I already do.  DH writes grants for a school system, so we like to think his job is fairly secure.

  • Things haven't really changed much for my husband and I.  We are eating out less and spending less, but its something we've needed to do for months, regardless of the recession.

My husband owns a computer repair shop in Greenville, and our business has been steady and busy since the beginning of the year.  I'm guessing its because more people are repairing their computers instead of trashing them and buying new.  Not to mention it seems like a lot of people are holding off from buying new computers because they like Windows XP, don't like vista, and know that the new version of Windows is estimated to come out next year.
