Where to live in Huntsville area?

We have only been to Huntsville once so we don't know much about the areas, but we might be moving there soon.  Where would you recommend living to be convenient to Redstone?  I know Redstone is huge, and I don't know exactly where DH would be working, but it would be somewhere along the flight line.  Thanks!

Also, I don't know if this would make a difference, but we will probably be looking at houses somewhere between $200K-$300K and prefer newer homes.

Re: Where to live in Huntsville area?

  • I don't know much about the area since I don't live there, just wanted to say welcome!  I know there are a few girls on here that live in Huntsville, so maybe they will be able to help you out!
  • I know this doesn't give you a specific area, but you can check out valleymls.com if you haven't already.

  • I love the Monrovia school district area (Harvest Area). It's very nice and not far from The Arsenal. I also love Hampton Cove area. It's nice. I do know that Monrovia school district is really good. We are looking to relocate there when we have children. Try these home...

  • Look in Madison. We just bought a house in Madison. They have the best school systems and there are alot of newer neighborhoods going up.  You can look for houses at valleymls.com and put in what area you are looking for.  The only thing with Madison is traffic can be a pain going into Madison after 4 when everyone gets off, but its not to bad.  If you have anymore questions let me know or if you need a realator I can recommend mine.
  • I am going to second Madison. We currently live in East Limestone (not that far from Madison) but we are looking to move to Madison in a couple of years.  Madison has great schools, it's convenient to Huntsville, the Arsenal, etc.  It has some great houses in your price range that are either brand new or fall into the 1-5 year category.  If you have any questions I'll be glad to help.  Good luck!
  • Thanks for all of the suggestions.  We have been looking at valleymls for a while...it's very convenient!  Are there any specific areas of Madison that would be more convenient to Redstone than others?  Any specific neighborhoods we should check out?
  • Hubby is a Land Surveyor and I asked him and he said Madison is probably the best for Arsenal work and it has a ton of new subdivisions so plenty of new construction houses.  We live in downtown Huntsville and there are not many new houses except in Hampton Cove which is about a 20 minute drive from the Arsenal sometimes longer with traffic. Not really anything that is more convenient...it's all convenient.  Lots of brand new neighborhoods on County Line Road.  Also areas around Rainbow Landing.  And they have new houses off of Balch road. Schools that these particular neighborhoods are zoned for (since they show schools on valleymls) are Heritage Elementary, Columbia Elementary, and Rainbow Elementary.  That way if you see those schools you'll be in the general area.

  • I think a downside of Madison is that it's hard to commute in and out of.

I live in NE Madison County (Near Mt. Carmel).  I commute to Research Park every day - which is really close to gate 9 (?) for Redstone.  It takes us 15-20 minutes.

I LOVE living where we do.  Mt. Carmel and Bridges By the River are two really nice subdivisions with good access to Hwy 72 and the Elementary/Middle Schools without having to drive on Winchester (that is sometimes a nightmare).

The taxes are also a little lower out in the "county" because its not part of Huntsville city proper.

  • I know of 3 new subdivisions being established right now off of Balch Road.  They are going to be pretty nice (all by the same developer).  There are also a lot off of and on county line that are nice.

  • i know i'm late to the party - lol, but just thought i would chime in. dh and i just recently bought a house in hsv. we are right on the border of hsv and madison (on zierdt rd) right outside of the redstone arsenal gate (gate 7). dh works on the arsenal (i did too until last yr), and it takes him about 7 mins to get to his bldg. 3 mins to get to the actual gate. our subdivision is a new one (about 2 yrs old), and we were lucky enough to have our house built. they have been (and still are) building like crazy down zierdt rd. and the houses are very nice (there are a few subdivisions in the price range you mentioned). i hope this helps!
  • I would say Madison as well. But if you don't mind a little bit more of a drive and want the best school system, live in Arab...

Arab is tops when it comes to academics, and every year they churn out tons of ivy league-ers.

I second Sarah.  DH and I live in that area, and we love it!  We bought a new house out here about 8 months ago.  The closer you get into Huntsville, the harder it is to find a new house.
