Baby books

I am currently trying to find some board books for my son that show or feature same-sex couples with children. Ideally they would be books that just happen to have two mommies or two daddies but aren't really about SS couples. Any one have a recommendation? TIA.

Re: Baby books

  • Really? No one has any book recommendations for me? Come on ladies, there has to be something out there.
  • I don't know of any board books, but here are a few of the SS-related children's books I have saved on my wish list:

    And Tango Makes Three
    The Different Dragon
    Emma and Meesha My Boy
    The Family Book
and of course the classic Heather Has Two Mommies

In the interest of full disclosure, I should perhaps add that I haven't actually read any of these, only marked them for later. GL finding books that suit your needs!

  • the sad truth is that there just isnt much out there! and the books that are out there (pp mentioned the good ones), specifically discuss same sex parents as thier main topic. but, i love that you're asking! the more demand there is for these type of books, the more likely the market will be to respond.
  • Definitely look into Todd Parr's books. He has one called "The Family Book" which introduces kids to many kinds of families including those with SS parents.  Here are some others:

Emma and Meesha My Boy by Kaitlyn Taylor Considine (about a little girl with two mommies who learns to be nice to her cat)

The Different Dragon by Jennifer Bryan (about a dragon with 2 moms)

Uncle Bobby's Wedding by Sarah Brannen (about a guinea pig whose uncle is getting married to another male guinea pig - looks adorable)

And Tango Makes Three by Peter Parnell (the story of two daddy penguins, this is based on true events that happened at Central Park zoo in New York)

King & King by Linda de Haan (the story of a king in search of a queen that ends up happily with a king)

Heather Has 2 Mommies by Leslea Newman (Not everyone likes this book - but it was one of the first of its kind! Newman has two new books coming out this June - one about 2 mommies and one about 2 daddies - and they both sounds promising!)

These are probably not all exactly what you are looking for, but they are literally some of the only existing children's books that include lesbian/gay characters.

This board is nowhere near as busy as many other nest boards, especially on the weekends, so it could take some time for more suggestions to come in.

  • Thank you girls. Keep the suggestions coming, I am ordering ALL of the ones you guys mentioned. DS will have a few same sex couples/famlies in his life and I want him to grow up being accepting and loving of their relationships and I think books are a good way to start that conversation.

PS. To all you moms-to-be, I am so excited for you all.  I hope you have a wonderful 9 months, more or less for those adopting.

  • I just wanted to second Mrs.F's suggestion of Todd Parr's books.  They are awesome and probably the most likely to come in the board style.  GL and let us know if you find anything else, please!

By the way... one of us should become a children's book author.  Seriously, we'd make a killing!
