Teachers~

I am from Georgia, but very possibly moving to VA this summer.  I'm beginning to look at the requirements for getting a VA teaching certificate.  I am currently a teacher in GA, highly qualified, and teach special ed in elementary school.  Before I even begin to apply to districts, do you think I should go ahead and take/pass the VA tests and go ahead and get a VA license?  Any advice you have is appreciated!

Re: Teachers~

  • I would...VA is a very difficult state to get licensed in. ?The tests can trip people up. ?Just like the rest of the country even education is getting hit with the economy. ?If you are doing elementary you will probably need to take the Virginia Communication and Literacy assessment (VCLA) and the Virginia Reading Assessment (VRA). ?Have you taken Praxis I and II? ?This way you can tell districts hey I'm in the process of getting my license as opposed to doing the provisional thing.

  • I hope I can give you a little bit of advice. H is a teacher here in VA, but we're moving to Philly this summer.

I would definitely recommend taking all the tests and getting licensed here as soon as possible. H had to take another Praxis and all this other stuff to begin the certification process in PA. Everyone recommended that he did it as soon as he could. As of today, PA has all his paperwork and he's just waiting to be officially licensed.

Moral of the story, it's better to get everything done sooner, rather than later because you don't know how long the process will take. H has been lucky that he's been able to get a few job interviews in Philly even though he's not fully certified yet, but I"ve heard it's obviously better when looking for jobs if you're already licensed.

    Good luck!

  • I'm just the opposite of you!! I was born and raised here in VA, but moving to GA (hopefully) in June and looking for a job as a Bio/Science teacher.  As far as I know, VA licenses are accepted in GA and vice versa. But check out the DOE website for VA to be sure.

  • I am a general ed. teacher but teach inclusion.  The special educator I work with graduated college in GA last May and was highly qualified there.  She got a job here in VB schools.  She now has to go take her Praxis, VGLA, and one other... VLA maybe?  I think she had 2 yrs. to take them.  Another general ed. teacher in my grade also came from GA and had to take the tests.

If you have 5 yrs. or more experience, you may not have to take the tests.... not sure.
