Katie's First Visit to the ER

What a night!  As I was making dinner, I decided to change her diaper.  I took her up stairs and she saw her Elmo barrette on the dresser and I gave it to her (I know----STUPID)

First thing she did was put it in her mouth.  I went to grab it from her and she turned her head, as she did this, I pushed it into her throat.  She started trying to gasp for air, but nothing was getting in or out.  I grabbed her and turned her on her tummy and started patting her on the back, but she was still not breathing.  I then tried to swipe it out of her mouth, which was making it worse, because each time I touched it, it was pushing it further back into her throat.  I finally got it and she was able to breathe.

She was screaming (of course) and then started to spit that thick drool crap and then I noticed blood.  I took her next door to my neighbor who is a firefighter and has 4 kids and he calmed me down and said that she probablly just had scratches, as she would not let us look.

I though I would still take her to urgent care just to have it looked at and for piece of mind.  I got there and there were maybe 40+ people in there.  I figured she stopped crying and seemed better.  I took her to jamba juice to get something cold and because she had not eaten anything in 6 hours.

My sis and Matt met me there and Katie was so much better, she was sipping on her blueberry/banana smoothie and water.  I thought she was fine.  We got home and Matt went to pick up something for dinner, since I pretty much ruined the chicken I was making.  Then it started, she would not swallow her spit.  Then she choaked on it and started gagging.  She threw up (mostly spit) on me and then a little on Matt.  He took her over to the sink and she threw up blood.  At that point, we decided to take her to the ER.  When we got there, she fell asleep in the car and was gurgling and wheezing and snoring really badle, obviously struggeling to breathe.

We called the nurse before taking her into the ER just to make sure we wern't over reacting and she said that it would be a good idea to have her checked out.  Any time there is trauma to the throat and breathing is hard, it is good to have it looked at.

We were there for about 3 hours and finally got the OK to take her home.  The ER doc recommended taking her to her regular doctor today, so we will.

Worse case senerio, she will have to have a scope put into her throat to make sure there is no further damage....this would mean she would have to have to have anastesia.  :(

I don't think it is that bad and I think the bleeding was from my nails scratching the back of her mouth.

I am exhausted!  But glad that I was able to get it out and that she seems to be OK.  She is still not swallowing her spit all the time, but I am sure it is just because her throat hurts.

i'm glad she's ok but wow what a scare!! i'm always so freaked out with anything jordyn tries to put in her mouth...

  • OMG!  I'm so glad she's ok and that you were so brave!  Good job!  I think I would have done the exact same as you, go to ER, think she's ok, leave, jamba juice, then go back to ER.  Ai!

Big hugs to you all!  Keep us posted.

  • Wow how scary.

Good thing you kept your head while she was chocking and was able to unblock her airway!

    Good job, Julie!

  • Oh my goodness how scary for you! I'm happy she is ok.  She will be just fine in time! Wink
  • So glad to hear that Katie is doing ok. Hopefully its nothing more.?

I was literally at the edge of my seat here while reading. Celeste puts everything in her mouth so I watch her like a crazy woman. A couple of times I've taken out coins and small Legos...geesh! She always finds the smallest of things inspite of me cleaning up and putting things up beyond her reach. ?I never had this problem with my son so its all new to me. ?

My continued prayers to her continued recovery. ?

  • I too was at the edge of my seat reading this! Holy cow! I'm so glad she is doing ok! Poor baby! This is super scarey stuff. I hand things to my DD all the time to try and keep her occupied. I pray that her throat heals super quick!
  • how scary!!

both of you hang in there - speedy recovery!

  • How scary.  Sorry you had to go through that.  But I'm glad she is doing better and hopefully she won't need to have the scope put down her throat or have the anesthesia.
