Hey girls, I c&p'd this from the pets board, as I just asked them for some advice. I'd love to hear what you ladies think as well. Thanks!
Hi ladies, I'm new to the board, and I've got a question about my dog, Oliver. Oliver's a terrier/hound mix and he's got a 3" long bald spot on his back. A few months back, we took him immediately to the vet and they tested him for mites and whatnot, and didn't find anything on the spot and said it was just allergies. It doesn't seem to be hurting him- he's just really itchy on the spot. I've been putting some cortisone cream on it to try and make it less itchy for him. I'm just still really concerned about it and was wondering if any of you ladies had any suggestions for what I can do for my baby. TIA!
Re: C&P: from pets board
My ILs' rescued boxer has this same issue - he came to them from the rescue with these missing patches, regrew the hair after they took him to our vet here and he was diagnosed with allergies, and is now back to losing patches of hair.
They opted to first try altering his diet and adding in a daily dose of Benadryl before going with medical treatment, which was the vet's preference anyway. Before doing anything yourself, I would consult with your vet just to get their opinion - we have a fantastic relationship with our vet, and he often wants us to try less expensive, home remedies (such as changing foods, etc.) before he goes to medical interventions, which is really nice. Unfortunately, my ILs' dog, Burnes, seems to have either developed a new allergy or a tolerance to his current food, so they're back to square one - the vet has them trying him on a new brand/blend of food to see if that'll help, and if it doesn't, then they'll reevaluate the situation. From what they were told, it's more or less something that, while irritating to the dog, isn't life-threatening, and would most likely have to be handled throughout Burnes' life.
Long and short of it? If I'm ever in doubt or unsure of the best option for my dogs' health, I call the vet.
... every single day of forever.
