How's the budget situation at your dists? Are they laying off anyone at your schools? At my DH's dist, they are talking about 9 or 10% salary reduction. My dist is talking about 2% reduction and laying off teachers. I am sure I will be getting my pink slip by next week. I hate being temporary w/ absolutely no seniority. I guess if I don't get hired back, I will stay home w/ the baby, which would be great, anyway. I do want to work and well, w/ two teachers in the family, I do need to work, but things happen for a reason, so if I don't get hired back, I guess I will just sub. Hope your jobs are safe. It will be great when this crisis is over.
Re: Hey, Teachers!
Yes, they are talking about laying off 200 across the board. When I was in the hospital one of the Dr's was saying that at her mom's school they layed off anyone that was 13 years tenure or less. It is a crazy time. A nurse even asked me where I worked b/c her roomate (a teacher) had been out of work for a year and needed a job. I'm really not sure what will happen but I'll definitely know by the 13th. Right now I'm just preoccupied with Dr's visits from my fall
.
MIL is in Fontana and they did some layoffs, she is scared that she will be one of them (13 years in the district).
A friend in Hisperia is 2 teachers away from being fired, even if they can save her job they will more than likely be moving her around (and I'm sure noncompliant with NCLB where they place her)
I guess I'm glad that I am still in the credential program, but I'm scared that I will end up with my MS in SPed and there won't be a job, or I will cost too much and not get hired
I plan to stay home with the baby as long as possible, and now DH is on board with me DRAGGING my feet as far as school goes, going part time, just enough to keep my loans at bay so hopefully next year the budget will be better and job options better too!
I'm in La Puente and so far things sounds ok here. Our superientendent is doing whatever she can to save jobs, so we don't get a cost of living increase this year (totally ok by me...MUCH better than a salary reduction!!), we are on a hiring freeze, purchasing freeze... I can't remember what else.
I know my principal said everyone at my school is safe for now. Its the elem. teachers on temporary contracts that have to worry!
I am on a probationary contract (next year I will be tenured!), so there are about 60 people who would go before me. Still sad though.
We do have 2 long term subs at our school this year though. One of them is filling in on a maternity leave situation until the end of this school year. The other position was for a teacher that quit mid-year (found a better teaching position elsewhere), so I don't know what will happen there. I don't think you can just use a long term sub in place of a credentialed teacher for an entire academic year, but I could be wrong.
Sharra, with SpEd you don't really have as much to worry about. Almost all our SpEd teachers were spared because there is such a shortage of them.
Hehe, you're not supposed to have a sub for an entire year, but districts do it all the time. My DH taught 1st grade for a year as a long term sub. They have gotten more strict about the "highly qualified" teachers since then, though.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking.
For the maternity leave situation, that teacher has been out since last spring, so we have had a sub since about March 2008.
The position where the teacher quit has had a sub since December of this school year. I think they are considering hiring the long term sub for that position for the 09-10 school year, but not totally sure since we are on a hiring freeze right now.
My principal has a way of pulling strings and getting what she wants in our district, so we'll see.
I long-termed, and you can do it for a year, because you are actually getting an emergency type credential from the state saying that you can stay longer than the 20-30 days.
I BET that they will change the rules with the way things are going!!!
Everything sounds so bad! I forgot to mention that my dist is also planning on clossing down 2 elem schools on top of all the cuts and yes, the freezes!
To make matters worse, DH just found out yesterday that they are eliminating 4 business teachers at his dist, and he is possibly the 3rd teacher on that list. We thought that one of us would at least be safe. Now, I am starting to worry. I am trying not to, b/c I always remind myself things will work out... but w/ both of our jobs in jeopardy and a baby on the way, it is rather scary. He is telling me he won't worry until he actually sees that pink slip. He is always so confident, and I wish I was like him. He has less wrinkles and grey hair than I do.
Thanks, Robyn!
My DH is actually tenured at his dist, so we thought he would be safe. Not only that, there are a lot of teachers at his dist who are not tenured or are on probationary. But these are different and difficult times, so tenured or not, it doesn't matter so much these days.
I hide them well.
I was talking to my principal today about the budget. Our district is not laying off ANY teachers this year!! We are actually going to be hiring a few teachers because of older teachers retiring. If you don't mind a small commute and need a teaching job, take a look at Hacienda-La Puente.
She also said that Pomona Unified is laying off any teacher who does not have 12 years in that district! Has anyone else heard this?? Crazy!!
Yes, it has been all over the news! I believe they are laying off about 600 teachers and support staff. It is ridiculous!
It is amazing how your dist is not laying off any teachers. Your union must be very strong or your admin are really good at budgeting or maybe both. Yeah, your dist would be a drive for me, but I'll look it to it. Thank you.
