Hi! I've never posted on this board before, but I just had a big problem and I'm not sure how to handle it. I live in a gated apartment complex and I just took my lab out to go to the bathroom. As soon as we went out I noticed two men and a woman hanging around near their garage with a pitt bull ( i thought they were on the restricted breed list at my apartment...hmmm) and a mastiff/boxer mix (i'm guessing). The mastiff immediately ran over to her and sniffed. I pet the other dog so my dog would know that it was okay (she's super skiddish around men and bigger dogs). They sniffed each other for a second then, all of a sudden the pitt bull starts barking and sprints over and jumps at her while the mastiff pushes my dogs back down. Two dogs, much larger than mine are barking and on top of her and my dog can't move quickly because the leash is all tangled and their owners aren't helping me. My dog is being attacked by two dogs and I am trying to break it up by mylself while they watch!! Finally a man runs over and my dog breaks free, he apologizes and I turn to walk away. My poor dog is like shell shocked and as soon as I turn my back I hear the other man who chose to do nothing say "that dog is crazy!". My dog and I just went out for a walk and she gets attacked and I have the crazy dog?!!? I was so rattled that it all happened within a minute of walking outside that I didn't say anything, but I am so angry! How should I handle this with my neighbors and my apartment manager?
Re: Opinions needed please!
Do you think they live there? Have you seen the men before or were they just visiting? I'm no help in this department. Is your dog OK?
That would have ticked me off. I would have been yelling at the guys the whole time "are you gonna effing help me or just stand there like idiots?"
I agree with PP about finding out if they live there
I hope your both ok
I am glad she is okay, and I am sure that it was super, super scary, to have two dogs get into it with yours.
When I was in an apartment, we would avoid all other dogs, go the opposite way, go back inside whatever. If the people and dogs looked friendly, I would ask if they could play, while my dog was inside. If they said okay I would go get her and do a little introduction so she could have a positive experience with the dogs.
I am pro-pitbull but anti-stupid owners. Since they don't seem concerned with training and handling their dog properly, I probably would report them to management. Maybe just enough of a complaint to start a paper trail - there may be other issues or complaints.
We had a neighbor growing up who used to let their two aggressive chows out without leases or fences. One came into our garage and attacked our cocker spaniel, who was trying to protect my mom. We did nothing even though Casey needed stitches and an overnight stay at the vet. We still regret not doing anything. The dogs went on to bite a kid and another dog, I think, before the owners moved.
I'm sorry you had to go through that - that's always scary and not fun! Not totally sure, but the guy who said "that dog is crazy" may have been talking about one of the other dogs.
If your dog is okay, and the people are normally fine, I honestly probably wouldn't report it, but I'd approach the neighbors and ask them to keep their dogs under control/on a leash in the future.
Also, I know you're shaken right now, and I'm hoping you weren't indicating it, but pit bulls aren't inherently vicious, nor do I think they belong on any kind of restricted breed lists (as those kinds of lists shouldn't exist). I think you may have just been dealing with stupid owners.
Love.
That must have been scary, but I'm wondering if you misinterpreted what the dogs were doing. I think if either of those dogs was really attacking your dog, you and/or your dog would have been injured.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think that their behavior or their owners behavior is acceptable (and I do think that they should be reported)... I just think they all sound really ill mannered, rather than truly aggressive.
