My husband has a business trip in Redondo Beach for six to eight weeks beginning next month. Our sixteen month old daughter and I will be coming too (from Washington, DC) and we're very excited!
I'm trying to figure out some things before I go and would so appreciate any tips on the area. I'm especially hoping to find...
1) A good pediatrician
2) The best grocery stores
3) Any good children's consignment stores (there are some things I think it'd be easier to buy there than haul across the country)
4) Any other favorite toddler-friendly places/things to do???
5) Finally - what kind of weather can I expect in April and early May? Is this shorts weather or more like pants and light jackets? The apt (Ocean Club) has a heated pool.... will it be too chilly to enjoy?
THANK YOU!!!!!
Re: Help! Anyone in Redondo Beach area?
gOOD
(oi, it looks like i've forgotten how to post!)
let's try this again: Good morning! We live in the South Bay (Hawthorne, not Redondo, but oh well) and I'm sure you'll enjoy staying here.
I can recc our pediatrician, Dr. Rita Tenenbaum. She's in Redondo, on Prospect Avenue. 310-406-0827. We love her! Hers is a single-doctor practice, so sometimes the appointments run late, but it's worth it to us if she's late with her previous appt, b/c we know she'll spend an equal amount of time with us, answering our questions and whatnot.
There is a big children's consignment shop in Redondo, on Torrance Blvd, just a few blocks east of Pacific Coast Highway (probably close to where you are staying) I forget the name of it, though! You can't miss it, though.
If Ocean Club is where I think it is, you are near a Whole Foods market and an Albertson's, both on PCH. Whole Foods is near the main branch library, and the Albertson's is further south on PCH.
What to do with toddlers? You can go to the beach, Seaside Lagoon might be open by then (it's an enclosed, heated saltwater pool facility) and though there aren't any good parks in Redondo, in neighboring Manhattan Beach there is Pollywog Park on Manhattan Beach Blvd (which is really nice, good play equipment and a duck pond) and there's a great park in El Segundo, too.
The weather in late spring is usually pretty nice --last year it was really warm and we had several hot days. It's a good idea to bring sweaters and jackets b/c it can get cold in the evenings, but days will be sunshiney and nice.
be sure to post when you get here, there are several South Bay nesties around! Perhaps we could arrange a coffee gtg.
I live in Redondo Beach and can probably help you with somethings.
1. Our pedi is with Kaiser, but I will get some good names of South Bay pedis for you.
2. I prefer Vons over Ralphs and don't care for Albertsons at all. We also have Trader Joe's and Whole Foods.
3. There is a children's consignment shop on Torrance Blvd, but there is also Children's Orchard in Torrance (on PCH) and in Manhattan Beach (on Sepulveda.) Plenty of choices.
4. There are quite a few mommy groups in the area. I go to one through the SOuth Bay Adult School and have been with the same mommies since my son was 6 weeks old. He is 19 months old today.
There is Adventureplex on Marine Avenue which is indoor playground, but they also have classes. You can take classes at Wondernation, Music Rhapsody, Music Together, My Gym, and Little Gym. There are tons of parks in the area as well.
I found Mommy groups on Yahoo and through Meetup.com. I couldn't stick with them once I went back to work, but they have great activites.
5. You are actually near us in South Redondo. The weather will be nice and you will have no problem enjoying the pool. We had 80 degree weather in January, so April and May will be no issue.
Welcome! You will love it here. Feel free to page me with any questions.
I am a little farther north in El Segundo but I grew up in the area.
1. Our pedi is Dr Christine Curtis-400 S. Sepulveda in Manhattan Beach (310)374-5568. She is wonderful and not that far from where you will be staying.
2. There is a Whole Foods near you but it is on the pricier side.
3. I think the one on Torrance Blvd sucks, it seems to have more run down stuff. I would also recommend Children's Orchard.
4. Seaside Lagoon doesn't open until Memorial Day so I think you'll miss that. There is Kids Concepts on Sepulveda in Torrance that has a toddler area, Adventure Plex in Manhattan Beach, the beach, plenty of parks (Polliwog is a good one, as is Rec Park in El Segundo) that have toddler areas. You are going to be close enough to Del Amo mall which is huge if you just want to walk around inside or Manhattan Village Mall which has a Pottery Barn Kids you can go play in.
5. Weather should be pleasant. At the beach, it gets much cooler in the afternoons/evenings with the sea breeze so plan on bringing some sweaters and jeans but you will also get use out of shorts.
Have a great time. It's a wonderful area.
I'm late checking back but was THRILLED to find all this great information! You guys are terrific!!!! What a wonderful resource. We are super excited but it is a little daunting to try to plan from this far away. But this all puts my mind at ease having some great ideas to look into already.
I may be back with more questions and will definitely say hello once we are settled.
THANKS AGAIN!
