Anyone have a vegetable garden?

I was thinking of starting one. If you have one what do you grow in it? Is it difficult to maintain? Any other tips on starting a garden? Thanks!

Re: Anyone have a vegetable garden?

  • I don't have a garden but I wanted to thank you for all the good wishes & I am sending lots of job dust your way!
  • Hi I have one.  At this time of year I have lettuce, broccoli and a ton of herbs. I haven't planted much this year.  I usually have to weed it at least once a week or it gets out of control.  I will be ready to start to grow eggplant, tomatoes of all sorts, peppers, etc.  I also buy the small veggie plants from Home Depot. It's easier than seeds.
  • Good question!  I was thinking of starting one too.  Anyone have tips for veggies which are resistant to bugs?  Also, do you have to have a giant area to have a vegetable garden?  I could only do 20 x 6 feet.
  • I am going to do pumpkins and watermelons.  I need something bug resistant too...I figured they had a hard protective skin.
  • Anything you plant in your garden will attract bugs. I use cayenne pepper to deter them away.  Just fill up a spray bottle with water and pour some cayenne pepper in the bottle. Spray the soil along the area where your veggies are growning. It seemed to keep away all tomato bugs and worms.

  • another good organic "pesticide" is neem oil.

  • we planted 3 types of tomatoes last year and they were ridiculously good.  I've never tasted ones so sweet.

We planted them with 2 types of basil.  Apparently planting basil with tomatoes helps in their growth.

The bugs eat the basil leaves but left the tomatoes alone.  I could still use the basil, becasue they didn't eat all the leaves and the ones with holes i just washed them really well.  I recommend it

I used SO much basil.  It made for a killer caprese salad!

  • Thanks for the tips about bugs ladies!  That tomato and basil combination might be just the ticket for us.  Hmmm...dreaming of fresh mozzarella and balsamic vinegar right now.  Stick out tongue
  • Now I am so excited about it. I need to plan it out better. I'm afraid the neighborhood cats are going to get into it. I'm willing to risk it. I want to do it organic too. It's going to be great!

  • Yes the cats will come in there. I used to get that too. The benefits of an organic garden are awesome but at the same time I had a bad experience with my broccoli.  Here I am steaming the broccoli for dinner, I serve it, am about to eat it and I see a huge green worm all plump and cooked. Eek!! I screamed.  I won't do broccoli in my garden anymore I have that horror pic in my mind. They camoflauge so well I missed it while washing it. Stick out tongue
