Since there was a really good discussion below about medical issues in the US. I figured I would see what you ladies think about the Bailout. I love these kinds of discussions.
What do you think about it? Do you think it is going to help the economy? Is it a waist of tax dollars?

Re: Your opinion...
ditto!!
I agree with both of you girls. I'm not huge on politics so I just hope that we get out of this whole soon. I'm sick of worrying if I'm going to have a job next week. I did write to my congress man robert wexler about it and he wrote me back saying that we need to fix the banks and other large industries before we try and pay the american people. I'll forward what he wrote to anyone that would like to read it.
Red- that's my exact problem. WTF bailing out the banks...i don't see less ppl having foreclosures. instead i see more and more small companies closing (which come on now, America was built on these small companies) and more ppl staying w/o a job. At least if the banks would say, ok we have all these xtra billions of dollars we are willing to work with our clients. but they aren't. The bail out that the previous prez made w/o keep track of the spending was ridiculous. Who is the idiot that does that!?!?!?!?!? And even better is that the CEO's, CFO's, and the rest of the O's...keep getting bonuses. WTF!!! And then they say that they have to lay off thousands of ppl. I don't see a purpose.
I know that there is very little that the gov't can do to fix out situation. I personally believe that this is D.C.'s fault for not regulating the mortgage section. Because now they talk about the ppl who purchased homes w/o having the perfect funds. That's not the case with everyone. I perfectly know its not the case in our situation!!! Instead....we bought our home 5 yrs ago. Paid it perfectly till the economy went bad and caused my husbands business to close down. He has now been w/o any income for about 6 months. So yeah, I'll be happy with $100k from that bail out money. It would have def helped out our business. Instead we had to layoff 3 ppl.
I agree with Ceventa as well.
I completely agree with you Mrs_Rod. it is the small businesses that keep this country running and they are all closing so WTF are we all supposed to do? I also dont think that the $400 a person that they are supposed to give us is going to do jacksh*t, as they put it "maybe we can boost the economy by giving everyone a little extra so that they will go out and buy a new TV". I'm not going to do that I have major bills to pay just like everyone else.
I dont know how to fix it but something needs to happen.
Seriously!! Our family's business that has been open for plus 30 yrs and has many of employees were about to close down as well. Then this business go to the banks for a LOC and what do the banks say, sorry but no can do. Ok, fine, I get it. Who wants to invest in a business in this economy? But seriously, if all of us don't take a little of risk its going to be worse.
I really wish for the best, but I'm preparing for the worst.

Thanks darling, luckily, DH and his family's business merged (couple of weeks ago). But if this had not happened then it would have been worse off in the long run for all of us. I'm grateful that he was able to do this and now we know that in a couple of months income will be generated from the hard work they are doing now. Yeah I'm not stressing. Seriously, I'm not willing to risk my health or my childs for the screw ups of the economy. I say, as long as we are healthy we are fine. We can bust our arss off to have a roof over our head and food on the table. But thanks for looking out... Btw, if you need any help w/the home stuff let me know. Did you hear Zgallerie is closing some stores so a lot of things are on discount!!! I want to head right on over!!
There is so much corruption its just sickening. Here's a good idea... lets just hand over billions of dollars to the banks that are KNOWN to have corruption. And lets not stress them with any "strings" or "requirements." AND heck, lets not even keep track of what the banks are doing with those funds. Golly Gee, I'm sure they will do the right thing... Yeah, like spending $1.2 MILLION dollars on a CEO's office remodel. I'm sure raw silk draperies helped jump start the banks lending. That's what happens when you have an idiot that appoints someone like Paulson as Treasury Secretary and then lets him spend 300 billion (or however much the first bailout payment was) willy nilly.
In case you can't tell... that whole sitution pi$$ed me off!
On a positive note, I really think the new program (Homeowner Affordability and Stability Plan) that President Obama is implementing will do some good. This is the plan that should enable the millions of poor souls (like ME) that have are upside down in a mortgage to renegotiate the amount of the principal. Lets hope this plan really pans out and the banks do as they are instructed.
Shirley - thanks for starting this discussion. I love discussions like this and as a public administration student, it's wonderful to hear what you guys think.
I agree with most of you that there was little to no accountability with the first bailout. In addition, there was still pork barrel spending being allowed in the bailout. I'm optimistic, but skeptical at the same time regarding the Obama Administration's approach. More transparency and accountability in our government is sorely needed. I do like the fact that the majority of the money that each state will be receiving will primarily benefit local governments. Those municipalities are hurting so badly right now and are responsible for providing basic services to the public.
We've had similar discussions in the local government class that I'm teaching at FIU (and I get to teach again this summer). Everyone is concerned and keeping a watchful eye on the new administration.
I am glad you guys have a plan. I can't believe Zgallarie is closing. Pretty soon there are not going to be any Home decor stores. We still have Pier 1. I am going to try and go this weekend to see if I can find any good deals.

Yeah, that's why I love teaching public administration - being able to discuss current issues. Plus the diversity of the class is wonderful. I have a few international students who ask really good "outside of the box" questions that make the other students stop and think.
