A factoid about the Hotel Del and Redondo Beach...

Here's a bit of trivia: The Hotel Del Coronado was built by Henry Huntington, the same Henry Huntington of Huntington Beach fame. Well, HH also pretty much put Redondo Beach on the map at the turn of the century, what with helping to bring in the rail lines to what was once LA's first port.

HH built the Hotel Del, but he also built a sister hotel right on the water in Red, the Hotel Redondo. They looked almost similar, and I've read that it was even more plush, with fireplaces in every room and most rooms had private baths. The Hotel Redondo was killed by Prohibition, though, and it was demolished in the mid-20s; sold for scrap lumber for some $200.

The hotel used to be where Veteran's Park is now. Of course, 20 years later visionary city leaders demolished RB's downtown, built all those view-blocking condos, killed commerce.... Imagine how upscale the South Bay could be if we still had our own Hotel Del?

  • Thanks for sharing.  I love learning new things and history in general.
  • Wow oh Wow! I love THIS kind of historical stuff. While growing up, my family and I went to Veteran's Park ALLLL the time! This info hits a sweet spot in my heart because of that.

I totally hate the high rise condos!!! What a friggin eye sore!

I'm with you...I'm shaking my head at the possibilities. Would have been soooo beautiful! The pic is amazing too! Wow more luxurious than the Coronado?!!!!  Wow of wow!

  • what a shame. ?i really hate when awesome, historical sites are torn down. ?the things built in their place usually aren't worth crap.
