E and I just had "The talk" ...he wants to wait due to transition and I want more than anything in this world to have a child.
We didn't agree on anything but for once we had a very seriosu conversation, I answered all the questions he asked and tried not to be TOO pushy. I mentioned that 8 years is infact a very very long time to wait... especially since if our first pregnancy hadn't failed we would have a 3.5 month old right now! We talked about having a child next year (well TTC next year) and then holding off on any more until the origional planned date. He is now thinking about it.
He ran the lines "if thats what you want we will do it" which drives me utterly insane. I explained I dont want to pressure him into starting a family until he is ready. The LAST thing I want to do is do something to mess up our relationship or to make him resent our child.
What he doesn't know (B/c I am in charge of the finances) is instead of starting a savings account for my motorcycle next year, I started a "baby" account. There is only 300$ in it but it's there just incase he decides to warm to the idea.
Anyway my question is I was looking at sperm donors on Fairfax Cryobank... their IUI samples are $460... each. Is this about average price? Also how many 'units" are recommended per cycle?
With our last 2 pregnancies we had the sperm donated by a friend. Since then he has decided he would no longer like to help.
Thanks for the help ladies, sorry I am a day late - my schedule is all backwards.
Re: Sperm Donor?
YAY for good honest conversations!
I don't know the average, but check out Californa Cryobank and Pacific Reproduction, and Xytec Cryobank for comparison. Be sure to factor in if you are using an ID release donor, shipping, etc.
Will you be doing ICI at home or IUI with a doctor? Our RE did IUIs, but said the ICI sperm was okay to buy since they would be washing it themselves - so that saved us a bit of money. We used two doses per cycle (we did IUIs on 2 consecutive days.)
Good luck!!!
That price is pretty average. Some cost more, some cost less, often depending on whether the donor has ID release or not, and also some banks charge more for donors that have advanced degrees (like a PhD).
As for how many are recommended per month - if you are inseminating with a Dr/Midwife/RE you will make a plan with them and decide how many times you want to insem each month. You can certainly get pregnant with just once a month; there are also many people who insem twice per month to help their odds.
If you are doing it at home, it's completely up to you. Each sample is 1 cc, which is will look/feel like a small amount, so you may feel comforted by having more than one, but again, it's perfectly possible to get the job done with one.

Thanks for the information.
We are planning to do it at home. I have no issues actually conceiving just carrying past the first trimester.
I plan to tell my OBGYN as soon as we set a month to start TTC so I can get a pap beforehand and an overall wellness exam.
E came home and told me he's ready to start TTC.....now to decide when.
We are also looking at friends who have offered in the past to donate - just trying to choose the best option for us.
If you seem to have problems carrying past the first trimester, you might want to talk with your doctor about being on progesterone to help keep your uterine lining thick. I know many people who have lost pregnancies early on, but was able to retain the pregnancy after using the progesterone.
Good luck!!!
