Have you used it? Care to share you experience?
What did you get, how much did you pay, where did you stay, etc.
Thank you.
Re: Priceline.com
Too many experiences to list.
Mr. Monkey usually uses a site like Better Bidding to predict what we will get.
Our latest coup is Le Parker Meridien in NYC for $100 for our trip later this summer. Regular price is $268+.
i love priceline. we've used it twice for san diego trips and been really pleased with the results.
you can be specific (4 star, 5 star, etc. and also with areas you want to be in) and i've found that if your first offer is declined, increasing it by like $5 will work.
we stayed at the hilton near the gaslamp district on a saturday night for $75, when the rack rate was double that.
and when we went in january, we stayed at the sheraton suites for $75 and inquired at the front desk about an additional room. they wanted $165.
I use priceline all the time! I always use betterbidding.com to get the right places at the lowest prices though, that site is fantastic!
Some of my recent winning bids are:
4 nights in Monterey @ Hyatt for $60/night
8 nights in NYC off Park Ave @ Intercontinental Barclay for $105 (after fees, can't remember the bid before)
3 nights in Vegas @ Wynn for $87/night
2 nights @ Hyatt Grand Champions in Palm Springs for $45/night
I have strategies for specific destinations based on betterbidding. For instance, with Vegas you have to choose the side of the strip The Wynn is on and only choose 5 stars, since it's the only 5 star on that end of the strip.
Better Bidding looks cool! I will have to poke around on that site.
Thanks for the responses. I'm not willing to pay $175 a night to get away but $75-$90 I can tolerate.
SuzieQ - whoa!
Ok I think I found the Better Bidding site that I should go to for help: http://www.betterbidding.com/index.php?showforum=71&
So I put my card down and I basically have to take whta I can get? What if I do it for tonight, is it too late to get a deal (basically, does there need to be advance notice or are there same day bookings)?
Another helpful site like BetterBidding is biddingfortravel.com
I use Priceline for almost everything.
D - some destinations have incredibly good deals at the very last minute, actually better than booking a few weeks or months out. Go to the two bidding sites and do a few pages of research looking for rates people won bids for that are for the same dates you wish to travel.
For NYC I kinda got screwed out of a better deal. If I had booked my trip for May back in December, I would have saved about $30 per night, but I waited until the last minute thinking I would do better, and I didn't because May on the Upper East Side in NYC is a popular time and place.
Vegas seems to be one of those places where you get better deals at the last minute throughout the entire year. Phoenix is kind of the same, and so are parts of the Pacific North West. Spots like Palm Springs seem to have the better deals when you book farther out.
My MM way of doing priceline is to check local tax rates out first, as they add quite a bit of $$$ to your bid in some areas. I try to factor in the tax rate before I place my bid so I'm not shocked at the final invoice.
HTH! Good luck, and read those forums!
Thanks SO MUCH! I am totally bookmarking this thread.
I'm 5-starring it too.
Yeah, I went there.
D - Where are you going?
I used it one for airfare and that was a big mistake. It was such a bad experience I stayed away from Priceline for too long and I wish I hadnt. We used it for our hotel in Seattle (same place WeeMo stayed at actually), got the room for $55/night, and were really happy with it. I probably would never use Priceline for airfare but definitely great for hotels.
I also recommend the 2 sites people have recommended. It really helps figure out what you might get and how much you can expect to pay.
