How much for daycare?

My husband and I are TTC and we are wondering what to expect for daycare cost. I know it varies greatly between home care, centers and nannies, but what sort of range can I expect? I work for UCSD and the center on campus charges $1300/month for infants. Does that seem about right?

 Thanks!

Me: 34 DH: 33. TTC Since March 2011. DX: Me: Fibroids. BFP 3.1.12, HCG 3.3.12=30, HCG 3.6.12=20, HCG 3.8.12= 10. CP 4 weeks,4 days.

Re: How much for daycare?

  • I live up in Murrieta/Temecula area so I'm not sure how it compares exactly. $1300 sounds like it is on the higher side to me but still within range of most centers. Here is an avg breakdown that I have found:

    Centers: $250/week

In Home (daycare in someones house): $150/week

    Nanny: $7-10/hr

I'm still trying to figure out the daycare thing myself since baby will be here in a matter of months. Looks like we will using a close friend of the families since we trust her and alternate with some nanny service (possibly). Good for you for looking at this ahead of time. I had some major sticker shock when I first started searching.

    Good Luck TTC :)

  • We researched this pretty extensively. Centers in San Diego such as Children's World cost $1495/mo for infants. Our daycare charged $210 a week. That has gone down to $185. The $210 included all food (milk) which we never utilized as we are going Organic. Good Luck. If you can afford the centers, this might be a good time. I think the economy is really hurting them. A couple that we visited called us later to offer us a 25% discount.
  • In home daycare can range anywhere from $130 a week to $250 a week, depending on where you live in the county.  Centers are usually a higher cost, most ranging anywhere from $200 a week, all the way up to $400 a week.  I am an in home daycare provider and have been doing it for almost 6 years.  It is also good to check what they include in their weekly dues.  For instance, for what I charge per week, I include all food, formula, and wipes.  I just ask the parents provide diapers.  Also, I charge a little more because I only serve organic fruits and veggies. So, it good to check what is included in your weekly fees.   Let me know if you need any referral phone numbers for your area and I would be happy to give you some.  Also a great site to check is The San Diego Family Child Care Association.
