Jewish Culture Question

Is there a big event in the Jewish calendar/tradition/culture coming up that I'm not aware of?  There are many aisles of Jewish food and stuff right when I walk into Publix, but nothing signifying what the event is.  I looked over the items and there are some really cool things that I'd like to try.  Anyone want to give me a heads up?

Re: Jewish Culture Question

  • Yep! The beginning of April is Passover. Passover is usually around the same time as Easter. That's why you see Matzo balls, soup, Manishevitz wine.....

We have a lot of Jewish folks at my advertising agency.

  • Ok, that was what I was thinking, so I wasn't that far off base.  Thanks for letting me know.  I think that I'm going to try a few of those balls and soup.  My new year's resolution was to try new things throughout the year...more things to add to my list.

Speaking of food...I'm still waiting for that recipe missy! Surprise

  • Oh yes,

Ok, well the recipe was a dash of this, a dollop of that....but here's what I did:

     Easy Asian Pork Stir-Fry

    Ingredients

    Boneless pork cutlets, thinly sliced

Cabbage stir fry (1 bag) in Asian section of produce at Publix.

Canned water chestnuts in ethnic section

    Canned bamboo shoots

Dry Lo Mein Noodles (1-2 bags)

    Soy Sauce (2 tablespoons)

    Terriyaki Sauce (1/4 cup)

Chinese 5 Spice (Badia makes a good one)

    Cornstarch (1 and 1/2 teaspoons)

    Canola oil (2 tablespoons)

    Warm water (1/3 cup)

    Directions:

In a skillet, pan fry pork strips in oil and some terriyaki sauce for about 5-6 minutes turning strips over. Set aside when done.

In a prep bowl, mix warm water, cornstarch, terriyaki sauce and soy sauce. Add in two dashes of Chinese 5 Spice seasoning. Stir well. Set aside.

Just like boiling pasta, boil lo mein noodles, but only for a few minutes, read instructions on package. Drain and add some oil to keep noodles from sticking. Set aside.

In large skillet or wok, add 2 tbsp oil. Over medium heat, heat cabbage stiry fry, add in bamboo shoots and water chestnuts.  Pour sauce from earlier over vegetables. Cook about 5 minutes until vegetables have cooked down slightly. Add in pork strips and lo mein noodles. Stir well until everything is coated in the sauce. Season to taste.

  • Thanks! I can't wait to try it tomorrow night for DH.  I know he'll love it.
  • All of that food is for Passover. I'll warn you though - usually the boxed foods for Passover are not the greatest.  Go in with low expectations if there are things you want to try.  There are so key ingredients that are missing to make a food kosher for passover and the taste can be a little off from what you are expecting sometimes.  For instance, nothing can have corn syrup so the sweet stuff tastes a little different.  If you are looking for a sweet treat though, the chocolate covered matzahs are my favorite!  yum!
