Relocating to KC?

Hi, all...my DH may be getting a relocation to the KC area.  Could some of you let us know nice areas of town to look for houses in?  He's in sales, so he'll be all over town anyway.  I'll have to find a job once we get there anyway, so that's not really a worry at this point in terms of where that would be.  We don't know much about the area, and would really like some input and advice.  Do you all love it?  Are there a lot of things to do?  Currently, we live near Cincinnati, and it's not the most exciting place...Cincinnati needs some work let's just say. :)  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks a ton!

Re: Relocating to KC?

  • Hi Duncyo,

I wanted to say welcome and hi.  I think KC has lots of nice areas but the city is really spread out.  So then to narrow down the choices all the questions I want to ask feel to personal like where will your husband work, do you have kids and  what is your price range.  So I will try to do general info. You will find that the city is divided by the Missouri River so people tend to say "north of the river," "south of the river" or "northland."  KC sit right on the border of Kansas so the city flows over the state line, you might not even know you are in a different state.   Some nice areas imo:
    The Plaza
    Brookside
    Waldo
    Anywhere in Johnson County (KS)
Pretty much all suburbs such as Lee's Summit, Blue Springs, Liberty, most parts of the Northland.
I am pretty sure one of our KC nesties is a real estate agent and she could probably help you out when it comes down to it.

I feel like there is lots to do, downtown is coming alive lately which is nice to see.  Hopefully this is helpful and good luck with all this.

  • Sorry just noticed your ticker so you probably don't have kids.
  • Hi iloveabe!

Thanks for the input.  If my DH gets the job, he'll be traveling all over the KC area, so as long as our house would be somewhere centralized, or not far away (like within the interstate loop) would probably be best.  That's how we are in Cincinnati.  We obviously are working on the kids aspect, so good school districts are good.  We are preferably looking in the price range just below $200,000 for housing, although closer to $160-170 would be preferable.  I just want to find as nice a neighborhood that we have here, but it's obviously difficult when we don't know the city.  All help is greatly appreciated. :)  Thanks!

  • I live in Lee's Summit which is on the eastern side of the city. We really love it here, we have a great school district, everything we need is close by and it is a safe area to live in. There are several real estate agents on the board, when we bought our house we used Jackie (bridejacqueline), Beth (bmf8140) I believe is also an agent. I am sure either of them would be willing to help you do some searching. Good luck.

  • Thanks, Melissa!  I'll keep all that in mind!  Any more input is greatly appreciated.  I like getting overloaded with info so that I can try to process through it. :)

  • How funny...we are moving to Cincinnati next month for my husands job.  I have been to Cincinnati and its pretty comparable to KC.  If you your looking for cute cape cods kind of like the area or Mt.lookout or Hyde park area I would check out Prairie Village, ks or Fairway, ks.  If your looking for more cookie cutter sytyle homes (very suburban) then check out Olathe, Shawnee, Lenexa.  Our downtown is really starting to develop. look up the Power and Light district.  If you aren't planning on starting a family living downtown would be fun or awhile.  I would suggest trying to rent for a month and checking out all the areas becaue KC is pretty spread out.  North of the river is completely separated from "Johnson County"  Let me know if you have any questions.
  • Thanks jp...will do...that helps a lot, too.  Also, any ?s you have about Cinci, let me know. :)  Mt. Adams and Hyde Park are nice, but are quite pricey.  I actually live in Northern KY, and love it...wouldn't have it another way.  I would stay away from the west side...very long commutes and the bad people are infiltrating that area...
  • Hey-I see I came in late and everyone has given a lot of good info already!

We live in the "Northland" area in Liberty and really like it. We are about 15-20 minutes from downtown and pretty much within15 minutes of everything else (shopping, eating, etc).

Do you plan on having kids? If so, I am a teacher and have the scoop on the districts that are the best and those that you should try to stay away from.

If you haven't started working with a real estate agent, I can help you guys out. I have my Missouri license, so I'm not sure I could help you if you decide on the Kanasas side. Let me know if I can help.

  • Thanks, Beth!  I'll definitely keep you in mind.  Yes, we're working on the kids factor...actually may be PG at the present time. :)  Anywho, let me know on school districts, please...preferably for the whole area if possible, that way we can get some ideas.  I'll e-mail you soon.  Thanks again!
  • Welcome, from a former Ohioan! I went to school in Dayton, lived in Columbus a total of 4 years, and have several friends in the Cincinnati/Lebanon area. Lucky me, I flew out to visit some of them last month on the weekend that the giant snowstorm hit!

We live in Lee's Summit and really like it, and the other girls have already given a lot of good ideas. We have friends who like Olathe & Overland Park. As far as things to do, they're trying to revitalize downtown, including a new arena and restaurant/nightlife district that recently opened and a performing arts center that will open in a couple years. There are a lot of parks and some good concerts coming to town, especially with the new arena. I've found people here are pretty friendly, similar to Ohio.

    Good luck with your move!

  • Okay, as far as the Kansas City, MO districts go, these are always top-rated:

    -Lee's Summit

    -Park Hill

    -Liberty

    -Blue Springs

If you go to the KS side, I'm not sure about top schools there.

I hope this helps! Looks like you got a lot of feedback already!
