Short Day Trips

We have some German friends (no children) coming to visit us at the end of April and they'll be here for two weeks so I'm trying to put together a list of things to do but I need some help. I think I've pretty much exhausted the list of things to do in Kansas City so now I'm expanding my list to things in the area (or farther) to see and do, so does anyone have any ideas? I'm talking things like visiting the KS state capital, a trip to St. Louis (although not a day trip really), a trip to Branson (another overnight trip), etc. They'll be renting a car so it's not like I have to tote them everywhere which is nice but I need to give them a good idea of things to do and see. I'm open to all sorts of ideas as I've got no clue what they'd be interested in. Thanks!

  • There are a lot of things to do in Topeka if they come to see the capital. There's the Kansas Museum of History, Gage Park & the [ahem, world famous] Zoo, Reinisch Rose Garden by Gage Park, Old Prairie Town, and more that I'm sure I'm missing. Yahoo! Travel has a list or you can google for others. :) A trip out to see the capital wouldn't take much time so they could do a few other things to take up their day.

  • To add to the Topeka list: the Brown v. Board museum is incredible.

Omaha is an easy drive. The zoo there is great and we ate in the Old Market area, which is a neat restaurant/shopping area. You could also see if the Omaha Royals are playing.

  • For shorter day trips, I love Parkville and Weston. They are both similar small towns with lots of shops and restaurants, and I believe there are also some wineries in Weston.

You may even look into a trip to Jeff City, MO to see the Capital there. It's a nice smaller city to walk around.
