Vent: Car repair add-ons

I'm rather frustrated- I took my car in to the dealership to get a major part replaced, and they called back (after confusing what I wanted done at least 3x) and had found two other things that "need" to be replaced, at a cost of $900 on top of the $1400 I'm getting charged for the initial repair. I refused both add-ons for now, and will be getting a 2nd opinion from the mechanic my in-laws have known for years. We would've taken it to him for the initial repair, but it's a part that's kind of funky on Hondas, so we felt like the dealership might have more expertise.

My car is 10 yrs old, so I know it will need repairs more often now, but it just seems like they're trying to pad the bill every time I'm in therel my dad said the same thing about his dealer. It just makes it a frustrating experience and makes me suspicious of their honesty.

Thanks for letting me vent!

  • I went to have a new lower control arm put on my car because I bent mine sliding on ice into a curb. They quoted me $240 before tax and tried to overcharge me. Being a female doesn't mean I'm a pushover and I'll just let you overcharge me. I'd definitely avoid that dealer if possible. My sister bought a Scion from a Honda dealer and then when we went to look at a car there, they sold it out from under us while we were pondering it. ((We were gone 20 minutes.))

  • That is so frustrating, sorry.  I think dealerships are shady.  I have had similar experiences and get really mad about car problems.  Part of me believe that if my husband would take in the car they wouldn't pull that crap...but then who knows.  Glad to hear you have a loyal mechanic.  Good luck to you.
  • It was Lee's Summit Honda. I think I will try to avoid there from now on and just stick with the IL's mechanic down at Firestone.

  • I have a good mechanic that I know & trust.  He handles the work on my 10 yr Honda Accord too!  Only thing is we're in Olathe..... S&K Mechanic
