  • Whew!! Boy am I glad I wasn't the only one saying "HUH??" to the dough question.

Yes....in florida we have funnel cakes and I LOVE THEM!! I mean talk about pure fat, but who cares!!??!! WOOHOO!!

And so to answer...powdered sugar all the way...

  • Ha ha! I had to think twice about the "sauce"....do you mean chocolate sauce?  I always get the powdered sugar, so I don't pay attention to anything else.

  • hehe, this is very funny! the sauce i meant was tomato....here we always have the option of powdered sugar or tomoto sauce and parmesan cheese (kinda like a pizza).  sauce could get very messy on a funnel cake though....
  • oh yes, i love funnel cakes with powdered sugar! i've never seen them any other way, though.
  • Where I live now its called funnel cake, but where I grew up they were elephant ears.  Both are ONLY sweets (powdered sugar, no chocolate sauce), and could never, ever be savory in anyway.  Seriously- the person suggesting such an atrocity would be ran over with the Elephant Ear trolley.
  • This is so interesting! I am familiar with funnel cakes (swirly with holes), elephant ears (flat and whole) and fry bread (Native American). I've never heard of "fried dough" or any of the above with tomato sauce.

  • mmm, I go to carnivals just for the fried dough.  Never heard or saw tomato sauce here in Boston though!  Powdered sugar or cinnamon/sugar mixture all the way.  If I make them at home there is always the option of butter & jelly on top too.  mmmm, yummy!

omg, that sounds sooooo good right now...

  • We have both here, but the dough is an elephant ear.  The funnel cakes are funnel cakes.

  • Ha....I have never heard it called elephant ears. I love fried dough with cinnamon and powdered sugar. When I tried funnel cakes they were good but a little more crunchy.
  • I love me some sweet, fried dough from all over the world... funnel cakes (sometimes with strawberries & whipped cream) to doughnuts (especially cruellers), beignets, sopaipillas, and fritters to zeppole and churros and gulab jamun to loukoumades and rosettes. ?Yummy!
