Any Recs on grass????

DH and I want to sod our backyard soon (hopefully in the next 10-14 days). Anyone have any recommendations? TIA

Re: Any Recs on grass????

  • St, Augustine works well in SA. Bermuda does too, but you have to work to keep the weeds out.  St. Augustine naturally chokes out most weeds, but is not as soft a bladed-grass as Bermuda.

  • last i heard, you cannot plant st augustine if you did not have it previously, due to how much it sucks the water.  HOWEVER, that was a year or two ago when we were bordeline drought, so they were banning anyone from getting st augustine if they didnt already have it.

i do not care for bermuda.  it is weedy.  and patchy.  a LOT of our neighbors have it.  try as they might, most of the yards do not look very nice.  i recommend zoisha (sp?) if you cannot get st augustine...zoisha looks like st augustine but the blades are not as thick
  • oh yeah, I agree that zoysia is also a great grass, but it is a bunching grass like bermuda, so you have to work to keep the weeds out.

  • I agree w/ the PP- Zoysia would be my 1st choice. It's expensive (~$200 pallet) but it does really well down here. We have an older home w/ St. Augustine. I really like the look of it and the fact that it doesn't go dormant in the winter. BUT it is not drought tolerant; you have to water all year long. That said, we just brought in 2 pallets of St. Augustine to fill in some bare areas. So we like it well enough. We had Bermuda in our last house and hated it!!

  • Right now we're trying some plugs of Turf - some grass developed by Texas Tech that's supposed to be shade tolerant and drought tolerant. It's pricey though and only available in plugs....I'll let you know how it goes in a couple of months ;)

DH hates St Augustine - we have some in places (our yard is a big mix, as well as weeds). I don't mind it but I prefer a softer grass.  The city "planted" some St Augustine along our sidewalk and it looks lousy. It's mixed with bermuda and that's looking much better.

The Bermuda handles the drought conditions much better - I refuse to plant a grass I have to water if we're in a drought, I just don't feel comfortable doing that. We are watering a lot know to get the turf going, but if it takes we can cut back.
