  • I work at a hospital in NJ. I run the lab on the overnight shift. I have been at this particular lab for almost 6 years ( since moving to NJ) but I have been a lab tech for 11 years. It's okay. I like what I do, but not where I do it. Its a rather toxic enviroment due to some really bad management. Unfortunately I will have to go back after the baby is born, the economy is too tough not to.

Carol is a supervisor in the forclosure and sales unit of our county sheriffs department. The one upside to the economic downfall is she has a lot of job security right now.

  • I work for a real estate company as a marketing coordinator, i do mostly internet and print advertising as well as some normal admin stuff.  I have been there for 3.5 years and for the most part i like it. Sometimes, especially with this slow market, i get bored and feel like i'm not being used to my full potential, but I really like my employer make fairly good money and they have been really understanding, especially when i came out and even more so when T got sick.  We already have kids but if we decide to have another baby (which i will carry) I will probably take maternity leave and then go back to work. It just makes more sense for T to stay home since she will probably eventually end up on disabilty anyways.

Right now T works for Wells Fargo, she is a banker. She has been on paid medical leave since August though. They are a really great supportive company so we have been lucky there. She is afraid she wont be able to handle the pressure of the job though and is thinking about going back to managing coffee shops, since she enjoys it more.

  • good way to kill time until 5pm...

at a hotel as a Sales Manager (corporate).  I have been at this particular hotel for almost 13 years doing various things.  I like it when it's busy but not so much right now.  I would love to teach (I think)...summers off, snow days, week vacations, etc.  I'd love to be a stay at home mom when I finally have kids but I make more so it's either daycare or K stays home but she likes her job so who knows.  She's a pastry chef/kitchen manager/purchaser for a hotel.

  • Where do you work?  All over the country...

What do you do? PeopleSoft (software product for large companies) programmer..I'm an independent contractor

How long have you been there? been a contractor for 5 years..10+ years as a developer though.

Do you like it? LOVE it!!

What would you rather do? Be indepently wealthy...

Will you still work when you have children? I have a 12 year old and could never stop working..thanks to lazy people in my past (whole other story!)

What about your partner? What do they do? Sandy is my personal assistant! ha ha! seriously, I make lots so I told her to take a break for a while and just enjoy being my honey.

My Blog - Life, Love and Laughter No government can dictate who we love. Life is short...so do what feels right!
  • I am a medical social worker at a children's hospital. I've been here 5 years and really enjoy it. I work in an outpatient clinic (general pediatrics) and while I am typically busy, I don' t have the pressure of working on the inpatient units. I like that. I did come back to work after having the kids. While we could have been okay without my salary (my salary pretty much gets paid out to our nanny), I wouldn't have made a good stay at home mom. I really need another outlet in my life - and thankfully we have found excellent child care and a good balance.

L is a government contractor specializing in organizational development/training/instructional design. She's been at this company for almost 3 years. Plus she is getting her PhD in adult learning and organizational development. She would have loved to be a stay at home mom - and would have been amazing - but sadly she is the breadwinner (by a longshot) and we couldn't do it on just my salary.

  • Kim - one of our best friends is a PeopleSoft consultant and he LOVES it. He's been doing for nearly 10 years and is always on client site somewhere (some really cool places (NYC) - and some not (Canadian tundra in January???)

  • Where do you work? Right now I don't work anywhere!

What do you do? Since I started working full-time and supporting myself, I have mostly done admin work, and I am now trying to find a new admin position, hopefully something part time.

Do you like it? I like admin work enough.

What would you rather do? I would rather be home with our imaginary children, which answers the next question...

Will you still work when you have children? No.  I would make barely enough to cover childcare, and my job is not at all important to me.  For the last 6 months I worked as a nanny, and my experience doing that confirmed for me that I will be so so happy to be a SAHM.

What does your partner do? Cecilia is an accountant.  She has her CPA license in PA and is currently taking classes to transfer it here to MA (MA requires more education hours for certification than PA does).

  • I am an 8th grade science teacher in small city outside of Boston.  This is my 12th year teaching (gulp) and i have been at my current school for 6 years.  I taught in another town in MA for 5 years and in NC for one year.

I love my job but sometimes it is hard to get everything done.  You can't have an off day with teaching so when you feel like crap you have to fake it.  That stinks. I do love my summer vacation though.  I have an bs in dev bio but would not like working in the lab.

I will have to work after we have kids.  I am the bread winner in our family so if we were to have one of us stay home it would be S.  Not going to happen though.

S is a project manager for an educational publishing co.  Things are rough there as they are a small and alot of their work is being outsourced to India.  She has a job now so we count that as lucky in this economy.

  • In addition to being a full-time graduate student, I am a birth and postpartum doula (independent, my own business). I've been in school nearly full-time (with a few short breaks) and have two bachelors degrees. My current masters is a two-year program that ends in June 2010. I've been a birth doula for almost 3 years and a postpartum doula for 1.5 years. I do mainly postpartum overnight work, with a few births here and there and I love it.

Next quarter (April-June) I'll be taking a hiatus from doula work for a bit while I'm doing a teaching assistantship for an undergraduate women studies class. I'm so excited! It pays a fairly good stipend and covers my tuition. This summer I'll go back to doula work full-time and begin teaching childbirth education and get certified in that.

Long-term, I see myself doing doula work, nannying and/or teaching at the community college level, although I may do a PhD or a Masters in Teaching at some point. After we have children I'll most likely nanny for a family with a child the same age as ours for the first 6mo-1 year. Once our baby sleeps through the night I may start working overnights as a doula again until number 2 comes along. I'd love to teach, community college and/or childbirth, so I'm pursuing that too. I like to keep my options openSmile

C works as a legal transcriptionsist and word processor at a non-profit, public defender law firm. She doesn't love it, but it works for her right now and is a union job, so it's pretty stable work. Eventually, I think she'd like to work in the technology industry, although her dream job would be as a professional photographer (she does that in her spare time).

  • My wife and I both work for CVBH. I work in Residential Placement and my wife works in Assertive Treatment in the mental health field. We have both been here for 1yr in NC. I LOVE my job!! I don't think I will be working here when I have children because I will have my masters by the time we have the baby and I would like to work with at risk children.

  • I have a specialized law practice. ?I started in in August of 2007. ?I love it and foresee doing it for years to come, even with children.

I am divorced. ?I expect that I will be alone for a long time. ?I am starting inseminations on my own in the late summer or early fall. ?

  • I work at Postal Service headquarters in Washington DC.

I'm an attorney. My practice focuses mostly on Freedom of Information Act appeals and litigation, Privacy Act consulting, and customer and employee privacy. I also do some federal compliance work.

I've been there for about a year and a half now, since I graduated from law school in 2007.

I can't say that every day is awesome, but in general I like my job very much. I have considerate, friendly coworkers, it's not overly stressful, great boss, and for the most part, interesting work.

Dream options: Travel writer, freelance writer, librarian, researcher, pop science writer, stay at home mom, frosting designer, professional catalog peruser...

I will still work when we have children because I have a very large amount of education debt to pay off. We really can't afford for me to be the SAHM.

Jen is an HR manager. She hires, fires, manages benefits, listens to people complain, gently escorts people out of the holiday party when she notices they are getting drunk and are at risk of saying something they'll regret in the morning, etc. She loves HR. She'd like to be a psychologist but she has a pretty bad memory so she decided against that :) Dream options: firefighter, EMT, actor/writer/director. ?

  • Where do you work? A freight forwarding company.

What do you do? It's complicated, but I plan large moves for military people an their famalies from city to city all over the world. It's crazy busy all the ime.

How long have you been there? 2 weeks. Yep I'm the newbie, I hate being the newbie, but at least this job is secure. We bill the government, for our services.

Do you like it? Time Will tell.

What would you rather do? Addicition counseling.

Will you still work when you have children? Not sure, probably.

  • i'm an hr person for two schools. i love where i work and like what i do. i've been at the schools for 7 1/2 years, but started in a much lower position and have worked my way up so i've only been in this one for about 2 years.

i'm not sure what i'd rather do. i love writing, but don't write enough (or well enough, probably) to make a career out of it. i also love taking pictures, but again not good enough for a career in it. i would love to be a sahm, but it really isn't feasible right now--and i'm vested at my job and really don't see myself leaving any time soon, barring any unforseen circumstances.

she plays with robots all night long. she's also on a volunteer firefighter/emt batallion and is licenced in both. she wouldn't enjoy being a sahm. i think she'd get bored rather quickly and needs work as her outlet.

  • I work as a civil engineer just outside of Boston. I have been here for about 3 years and I like it much more than my previous job. I don't mind engineering but I suppose I would rather work with people and/or kids. I will still work when we have kids as will M. We will use our family members as much as possible so daycare will only be a couple days a week.

M is a CPA and I think overall she likes her job just not during busy season.

  • Where do you work? at a major insurance company (afterall, CT is known as the insurance capital of the world). I've been with this company for 3 years and was at another for 2 years before that.

What do you do? i'm a business consultant in the complex litigation department.  basically i manage high dollar lawsuits across the country for our large commerical insureds.

Do you like it? i do. there are days when i get sick of it and want to scream at the rediculously unreasonable plaintiffs/plainitff's counsel I have the pleasure of working with, but its a good fit for me.  I enjoy working independently and the position offers a lot of flexibility and self-management which is key for my personality.  I actually have my masters degree in school psychology but never transitioned because it didnt make sense financially.

What would you rather do? i think i'd really enjoy being a SAHM but thats not in the cards since i'm the breadwinner. perhaps someday when i dont have to worry about paying for daycare, ect I'll try my hand at counseling or school psych.  what i'd really, really, like to do is win the lottery and open an equine therapy ranch for children.

Will you still work when you have children? yup...unless of course i win that lottery ticket...Andrea and I will both work, unless we have multiples, then she'll be the SAHM.

What does your partner do? She's an office manager in the therapy department of a nursing home. She's fantastic at it, and has recently decided to go back to school to become an occupational therapist.

  • I work at a university doing student information/registrar functions for one of the smaller colleges. My job is OK. Love the field, don't LOVE my job. I want a more student focused position...but I'm in a higher ed management doctoral program part time (same univ, good tuition remission, pays abou t 75% after taxes) so I'm stuck here for a bit. I'll spare you the gorey details right now.

Chris is a mechnical engineer at a biotech firm and loves it. She's also love to SAH or teach, but makes WAY more money than me so I don't know. I don't really want to SAH but if we had twins it might be an economic necessity. Lets hope by the time we hit those bridges I'll be making a little more than my pittance.

  • I'm a full-time student and part time pharnacy tech. I'm working on my second bachelors, this time it's in elementary ed (K-6).  My first degree got me no where as far as employment, but I don't regret it (most days).  I graduate next spring!

Katie also has a useless degree and is now in retail management.  It sucks bad, but she's hoping to go to grad school when I'm done.  She wants to go into Women's Studies and History.  We also want to settle down in the Indy area ASAP, and I'm not sure that's possible when in academia.  *sigh* we don't know what to do.

  • I'm an ER nurse at a local trauma center. It's super busy but I love it. It allows me to only work 3 days a week (12 hour shifts). I've been there about a year now and I will continue to work there during pregnancy and will go back after we have children.

Jenn works as an ER Tech at a different hospital and she loves it. She's been there about 5 years now while she tries to get through school. We both love having stories to trade in the morning when we get off of work. :)
