Have you had a fiesta themed shower/party?

Matt turns 30 next month and I'm going to throw him a surprise bday party in my parents' backyard. I thought that since we all live in SA, several of you might of had fiesta themed parties... For food, I'm thinking: *fajita bar with the works (my dad makes great fajitas) *tortilla pinwheels *spicy corn dip (same that I brought to bunko) *guac & queso *rice and beans (I'll probably just pick this up from Taco Cabana, unless y'all have a better suggestion. I hate beans, so I don't know who makes the best...?) more apps.... imported beers w/ limes, margaritas, water & sodas For dessert, chocolate cake w/ choc icing (boring, but Matt's fav) Maybe those sombrero cookies just 'cuz they'll look cute on a plate (http://jas.familyfun.go.com/recipefinder/display?id=40951) Any clever decor ideas? Something unique and fun? I'm thinking about getting pics of Matt from all 30 of his years and display them all over the yard. I also thought about ordering sombreros for everyone to wear. Stupid or cute? Should I do a pinata? What else??

  • do cascarones! your menu looks perfect. when we had our Fiesta party we catered Los Barrios. i also ordered a bunch of stuff from Oriental Trading for decor...sombreros (yes get them, they are great for photos!) mexican banners, pinatas and confetti for table centerpieces, etc. and i think a pinata is a must for a bday! also if it's outdoors and at night, maybe have some candles/torches all around too.
  • I think that sounds great! I wouldn't get sombreros for everyone, but get some so people can wear them. I'm sure all the drunk guys will fight over them. I think a pinata would be fun too. It could get dangerous however!
  • don't forget the pinata!!!  LOL.   Sounds fun Lauren.  I have no idea how you make sombrero cookies.

  • You should get bunuelos! Yum! If you need decoration idea you need to go to Alamo Fiesta at N. Main and Ashby. It has any fiesta type decorations you could ever want or need. And their prices are VERY reasonable. They'll have lots of stuff that would be great to string up in between trees, along fence lines, etc. I would totally do a pinata.
  • Sounds like a great idea!
  • you have to get a pinata!!
  • We actually threw my boss a fiesta retirement party not long ago. We got her an awesome chocolate on chocolate fiesta cake from lucy's. Love the sombrero and the pinata ideas. I'd just get a few sombreros though. I also have a great sangria recipe if you want another beverage option. I too am not a bean person and would probably also make a run to TCs for that. Sounds like fun!

  • You could do those paper flowers or serapes, I know I spelled that wrong, for decorations along with everything else.
  • I can give you a good bean recipe and its hella easy to do. Hell toss it all in a crockpot the night before and its beans!

Yes do a pinata! Make sure everything is colorful.
