I'm having some issues figuring out what to do with my mantle over my fireplace and another display shelf in the kitchen.
I can email pictures or post them on here after lunch...I really just need some specific suggestions. I have a corner fireplace if that makes a difference.
Anyone have any ideas?
Re: decorating nesties
How do you have your kitchen and livingroom decorated? Color's etc...? That will give me/ us more to go on.
This could be for either room. Find some cute decorating boxes in whatever color your room is or an accent color also vases and real or fake books( stacked kinda twisted), or painted dishes on plate stands, Or a small lamp (this is more for the mantel.)

(sorry couldnt make it clicky)
JCPenny is having a big sale on all their home stuff to. see if you can find something there.
For over the fireplace, if possible, how about haning a flat screen TV? I always like mirrors over fireplaces, with some accent pieces on the mantle. Maybe a photograph of the wedding?
Now for kitchen, I always hate those empty spaces above the cabinets; this is why I had the cabinents go all the way up to the ceiling. Anyway, MIL has some display bottles (oil w/ veggies inside). Maybe pair those with some other cookbooks, etc

For over the mantle I like the idea of simple stuff. A very elegant vase with some flowers and maybe a frame? Again, they should be simple and coordinate in order for that to work imo.
For over the kitchen cabinets im actually a big fan of having one or two unique vases. Check out Pier 1 for what I like to call "weird rustic looking" vases, bowls or things. I then go to Marshalls and try to match that to the ones I see at Pier 1 because they are a bit overpriced imo. I actually bought a huge bowl (kind of like a pasta bowl) that has all these weird desins and colors and put it up there on a stand. It looks really cool.

it's not really the above the cabinets thing (although mine don't go all the way to the ceiling -- but I too LOATHE the empty cabinet tops). I actually just redid my kitchen (refinished cabinets, new paint on walls). And I created a display shelf above the microwave where useless cabinets once were. I got my inspiration from here http://www.roomzaar.com/rate-my-space/Kitchens/Painted-and-Glazed-Cabinets--H/detail.esi?oid=502532
I repainted my cabinets the same way. I don't have tile backsplash yet though, and I have a swirled tan/beige tile on the kitchen floor. The walls are painted chocolate mocha (like a cafe con leche color). Where her display shelf thing is I have a window (still no curtain b/c I can't decide on color). my display shelf is above the microwave.

see my post above for kitchen colors. The rest of my house is painted Harmonic Tan (it's a Sherwin Williams color). My couches are like a stone color (like a grayish). And I have blue and orange throw pillows out now (but I switch them out often). My fireplace is in the corner and the flat screen is on the wall to the left of the fireplace and there's a big window to the right of the fireplace.
I still haven't taken my lunch, but I'll take some pictures when I get home and email them
