Has anyone used Kennelwood?

My husband booked an appointment there tomorrow so our dog can attend their "daycare."  I've seen mixed reviews doing a Google search, but I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with them?  Please share any stories whether good or bad.  TIA!!!

Re: Has anyone used Kennelwood?

  • So, I've not used them for daycare, but I have used them for both training and boarding. I'm not a big fan.

Couple of things - when I first went there for dog training, I did the group class. They mixed large and small dogs. Unfortunately, a big dog and a little dog didn't get along. The big dog put the little dog in its mouth, and the little dog ended up dying. Not that he got eaten, but I believe it was from shock. I then pulled my dog from that class and did private training with them instead.

The last few years, I used them a few times for boarding. Every time we went, we were charged something different. We also always got different answers from the people who worked there - never the same answer.

Lastly, I took my dog there one time and paid extra for her to have a bed. When I picked her up, the bed was no where to be found. They just decided since she wasn't using it to take it out and give her more room. Sounds fine and good intentions, but I had to pay for it. I felt they should have at least called me and asked me what I wanted them to do - keep it in there or take it out. If it wasn't a "charge" I wouldn't have cared.

Anyway - after many bad experiences, I gave up using them and started going somewhere else for boarding.

I have not used, but heard good things about Happy Tails on Lindbergh. They have a "daycare" I believe. They also use an open system where dogs can play/wander around with each other. I wasn't comfortable with that, which is why I didn't use them...but the people I know who do use them love it there.

I just noticed your in Troy - not sure of the options or how far you're willing to drive. I really liked Westinn Kennels. They have a location in Wentzville and I think it's Dardienne Prairie (can't remember exactly - but it's right off 64/40 in St. Charles County).

    Good luck!

  • We have only done grooming at Kennelwood, never boarding or daycare.  But I have also heard good things about Happy Tails on Lindbergh near Page.  I work close to there and a co-worker is always bringing her dog there.
  • Our Nicholas goes to Happy Tails for boarding & grooming.  He's not been there for boarding, but he loves stying there.  The have separate areas for large & small dogs, access to indoor & outdoor areas as much as they want, beds to hang out on if they want.  They only cage them 1. to eat so no food issues (you bring their food), 2. for time out if they need it & 3.at night if you request it.
  • My parents use Westin and love it.  They went out of town for the weekend with some friends and both took their dogs to Westin.  They were able to arrange with Westin to have the 2 dogs play together since they are good friends.  The dogs love it there!  My parents' dog always comes home exhausted from playing all weekend.
  • I liked Westinn so much for our dogs that I'd drive from Creve Coeur out to St. Charles County just to board them there - even though we had other kennels much closer to us. It's actually in O'Fallon and Wentzville - not D.P. as I originally posted. Their website is www.westinnkennels.com

I always look for a American Boarding Kennels Assocition (ABKA) certified kennel before I take my dog there. It's actually called "Pet Care Services Association" now. Check out some places on there if you're interested.

  • Thanks so much for the recs everyone!!!

We ended up taking our little guy to Kennelwood since we had a gift certificate for them.  I think they did ok with him, but I just got a bad vibe from them, so if we need to send him to daycare again, I don't think it will be there.

Thanks again for the recs.  I'll definitely check them all out!

  • Just wanted to say we took our dog to Kennelwood a few times and every.single.time he would come back with tummy issues or an eye infection.  We haven't been back.
