NDR: Our bank just caught a fraudulent charge on our account

We got a letter from our bank in the mail today that said we needed to call about unusual activity on our account.  It was listed under DH's card number so I called and told him to check on it.  He called me back and said there was a charge for $1.01 from some company that was actually a test charge to see if that would go through so they could put a bigger charge on there.  I'm so glad the bank caught it before it got any worse.  We do a lot of online shopping so I'm kind of surprised this hasn't happened before now.

This is the second time in the past week we have had a call about suspicious activity (the first was a mix-up on our part with the credit card).  It's nice to know that these companies are looking out for us.

  • Thank god they caught it.  You are very lucky.

  • you got lucky! we just got sent new credit cards last week because our account may have been compromised.  It's good to know they're looking out for you!

  • DH's card had something crazy like that happen, too!  Except the charge was only 10 cents!  One morning he's like "Meg, what's Duane Reade?"  I tell him it's a drugstore like Rite Aid or Eckerd's down in NYC; there's one right my my parents.  We hadn't been near there in months.  He checks it out and there were 3 charges all for 10 cents from a Duane Reade in Queens, NY.  I guess that's what they were doing--seeing if they could get a bigger charge from it!

So happy your bank caught it!!

  • That's great your bank caught that!  Dh had a similar problem but random stuff would just show up at the house like a poster of someone's car.  It wasn't professional or anything, just a huge picture.  Thankfully the bank took those charges off and sent DH a new card.

  • That's so wonderful that they caught it! When I was in college, my grandmother gave me a fairly large check for graduation. I had it cashed and because of the amount, it wasn't set to clear until afer 12:00 AM CST. I hadn't told ANYONE that I got it because it was a fairly large amount for a college kid. It's not something you brag about to everyone else who has been living off of ramen noodles just like you have....it's insensitive in my book.

WELL.....at 1:05 EST, a withdrawal for the exact amount was made outside of Atlanta, GA. (I was in Alabama so it was impossible for me to have done it.) I get a call from the bank asking if I had been in Atlanta. When I told them no, I was informed my account had been compromised. I had to stay on the phone with them all day trying to file reports and what not...it was a huge mess.

There was some kind of criminal ring taking money from accounts with similar initials to mine from a specific bank chain. They don't know if it had anything to do with me using the account online for shopping purposes. I know I hadn't accidentally fallen for one of those pfishing schemes either. (Thta's where you get an email asking for your account number and pin in an email disguised as one coming from the bank.) I knew better than that!

Because that wasn't the end of it, and the bank wasn't sure that they had the security issues resolved (their own admission), I ended up taking the money from my account (once I got it all back of course!) and moving to another bank.

  • ahhh, my subject.  I have worked in the credit card industry the past 4 yrs and prior to that was in the banking industry.  Most banks and credit card companies automatically check for things like this - there are alerts that are sent to them in the event that your card (credit or debit) is used outside of your "normal" range - meaning in the case of Mel above, she probably never went to ATL in months or years if ever a recent time and when that happened, it sends a "flag" to the bank/co.  They will call to alert you and work with you on it and then take action against who is, attempts or does use your info/card.

There are dedicated people for this activity and all fraudulant activity such as this.  If EVER you are traveling outside your "normal" area let them know, then they are aware and it's not suspicious activity.

Also, when ordering online, ensure it's a secure site (you'll see a little lockbox at the bottom right corner of your status bar) and if they are registered w/Verisign or something like that it's even better.

Protect yourself first definitely, but there are things in place that automatically protect you as well.

If anyone has questions, I'm happy to help!!!!

Yes, definitely let anyone know if you are ever traveling out of your normal range! Dh and I went on a road trip to see family, and after 2 gas purchases (and we needed about 4 total to get where we were going, all in a 20 hour span) - they put a block on my card! I had to call them and get it straightened out in the middle of the night and they explained that since the purchases were out of my normal range, and they couldn't get a hold of me (because I had only my home phone listed) they blocked the card. It was an annoyance at the time but I am SO happy they do that - go Discover, lol. :)

But wow, glad you caught that activity right away!!!
