Counselor

Hello all,

Well, things have been tough lately and I'm sure some of you have been here before: we need to see a counselor.  We've seen one before but she was not very good and I don't think she was very comfortable counseling a lesbian couple.

Do any of you have any advice/referrals?

Thanks so much,

Summer.

Re: Counselor

  • We found one through the local gay newspaper ads in the back.  There were several listed and we called a few to get a feel for them and to see what their availability was.

You might also Google gay therapist and then when you live (or closest big city), that leads to several people when done here (in DC.)

    Good luck. We've been there.

  • First, good for you for identifying the need and being willing to act on it!

We found our couples counselor via the "Find A Therapist" tool on the Psychology Today website. Here's the link:

Look in the "client focus" section of the profile pages, and some will specifically list "gay/lesbian expertise". Don't be afraid to shop around-- call a few and chat with them to get a sense of whether or not they'd be a good fit for you. Best wishes!

  • I don't have a name for you but wanted to say I think it's great you are taking this step forward. I hope everything works out.
  • I am a therapist.  Besides seeking someone who is comfortable/skillful with LGBT issues, look for someone with couples experience -- better yet training in working with couples.  It is really different that working with individual and requires a different skillset.  Lots of people who are not skillful at it are doing couple work.  Otherwise, the other suggestions are good ones -- a local LGBT center/service or psychology today.
