Any one been to the Grand Canyon?

I'm trying to plan a trip.  Where's a good place to stay?  Is it easy to find things to do on your own - or is it better to book excursions?  What are your favorite things to do there.  Where are good places to eat?

I want to see the new skywalk and take in the scenery.  I want to do some hiking - but since we are slightly more active than couch potatoes I don't want to get too in over our heads...

I was thinking of booking a hot air balloon ride, jeep tour or raft trip.  Right now were are planning on staying 5 days.

Thanks for your opinions!!!

Re: Any one been to the Grand Canyon?

  • I did a quick day trip last year to take family there. Don't ever do just a quick day trip - it was insane! There are a couple of hotels just outside of the park, a Best Western, I think, and I can't remember the other one. There's also the hotel within the Canyon area itself. We stayed in Flagstaff since we were just going for a day. It's about an hour from Flagstaff to the park. You could always head there for a day to check out Flagstaff.

There's the mule rides to the bottom of the canyon if you didn't want to hike everything. One of the jeep tours would be neat but I think those fill up pretty quickly! There's also aerial tours by plane or chopper, I believe.

The canyon is absolutely breathtaking. Spend as much time as you can just soaking it all in and checking out all the points. Do sunrise and sunset to get some amazing pictures! You'll have a great time!
  • Thanks for your suggestion!  I do want to be close enough so we can really explore.  I was looking into staying in Williams, Az and I will be giving the hotels closer to the park a look.
