Paso Robles area anyone?

My DH and I are going to Paso for a few days this September for our anniversary.  He was born/raised there but we have never stayed there together.  Any ideas of things to do that would give us the "local flavor"?  We of course are looking for winery, food and entertainment recs too!  TIA

Re: Paso Robles area anyone?

  • Hello! I accidentally clicked on this board looking for the Inland Empire board. I went to Paso recently and loved it!  As far as wineries, I defiitely recommend Castoro Cellars, Donati Family Vineyards and Firestone.

I would stay away from Eagle Castle- it is very busy and their wine is just so-so. The building is a giant castle though so you may enjoy stopping in. I would also stay away from JanKris. Their wine tastes like grape water. My friend does like their almond champagne though.

    Have fun!
  • I feel like I'm following MrsRebecca around!

My favorite wineries include J. Lohr, Tobin James, Castoro Cellars, Laeticia (In arroyo grande south of Pismo), and Harmony Cellars (just south of Cambria). I also like Castoro Cellars, although I quit the wine club because they started shipping with FedEx instead of UPS.

You also need to go to the Willow Creek Olive Ranch, home of the Pasolivo olive oils! YUM! It's on the west side, kinda near the area where Justin is.

Food is a little more difficult because when i am there, I am all over the place! Taco De Mexico in Morro Bay is rad, and Robin's in Cambria is REALLY good. You might try on the Central CA Knot board - there were some Knotties/Nesties from the area on there not too long ago.

  • Thank you both, I am really looking forward to it!
  • Hi! I'm from Paso and would love to share some ideas with you. Wine tasting is good... there are TONS of places to go. Visit www.pasowine.com for more details. Lots of great restaurants. We're close to the coast, San Luis Obispo & Hearst Castle. I'm sure you'll love it here!

  • I hate the fact that I was the last person to respond in the old format and my post never made it here.

Short version: Paso isn't that exciting. Good wine, good food, a movie theatre, a bowling alley, and it's topped off by craptastic Wal-mart. Michael's at the Airport is yummy, as is Basil's. Air balloon rides.

San Miguel is 10 mins North. Dirty icky town. Lived there for a year. Cool Mission. Best place to view stars.

Paso will probably be pretty hot still in Sept. SLO has a more temperate climate.

Visit San Luis Obispo. College town. Novo's is kickass. Madonna Inn is interesting and has the best cake.

I also suggest Taco Temple in Morro Bay and the Cracked Crab in Pismo Beach.

  • I'm dying to know how her trip plans are turning out!

  • Taco Temple is overrated (it's been written up in Sunset Mag)... there are much better places for seafood if you're going to be in Morro Bay.  I'd skip Cracked Crab in Pismo also.  There are better places in Pismo.  I hope everyone reads the post by hero and the yahoo's stay away ;)  hehe - just kidding!  Crooked Kilt is a bar in downtown Paso (owned by the same people who own Schooner's in Cayucos).  They have good food (yes, even though it's a bar).  Just south of Paso is McPhee's in Templeton.  It is on my top 3 fav restaurants ever... especially if you can go when they are having a Sunday brunch (they no longer have it every Sunday but you might check as September get closer). Wineries:  Opolo, Grey Wolf, Garretson, Midnight, Tobin James (always a lively crowd)...just to name a few if you don't already have them on your list.  For local entertainment, check out New Times online as your date get's closer.  Like Serendepitie posted, I hope you have time to let us know how your trip goes =)
  •  Instead of just ripping on my suggestions, just suggest a better restaurant.

  • Hero:  I didn't mean for my post to sound bad towards your suggestions - I'm sorry it came across that way! Tongue Tied
  • i'm from Paso..There are many things to do in Paso, you just have to look around! Walking downtown, to eating at Basil's, going to the River Oaks Spa's, to golfing, to wine tasting! The beach is only 35 mins away.

I recommend going to firestone brew.. its right off of the 101.

  • I live here, have for 26 years, I love it! Just look around and you will find great things to do.. Some of my best friends run Firestone Winery, works at Villa Creek by the park, another at The Paso Robles Hot Springs... Its a great little town, just open your eyes to what is around :)
