Possibly moving to Silicon Valley area...need help!

I really hope I don't have to move (no offense) but my husband's company just got bought out by Yahoo. It is possible that we might have to move in the near future.

We live on a farm in Tennessee right now just outside of Nashville. I ride horses competitively & I have 3 horses....and lots of other critters.

I don't know much about the area at all, but I am very concerned that I won't be able to get a farm in California. I also don't think that we would fit in at all.

Any info is appreciated! Thanks!

  • Okay California really isn't all that bad! You are probably just thinking about the LA version of California. Believe me, most of us Californians are down to earth real people. I live in Clovis (suburb of Fresno) on a 5 acres out in the country. We have two horses, 20 something sheep and chickens on the property and most of our neighbors have horses, cows and other live stock. The Central Valley is the bread basket of the world, we have more farm land than most states back east!
Now Silicon Valley is located in the Bay Area which is one of my most favorite places to go, it's sooooooo beautiful. It is a little fast place, but who's to say you have to live there. There are a lot of smaller cities located very close, with lots of room for a horse or three lol!
California is a little pricey, especially in the Bay Area, but the smaller towns are more affordable. Just take a trip out here and check it out. You'll see it's not so bad!
  • I just moved from silicon valley (Palo Alto) and I really did like it there.  We relocated to be closer to the beach, but it's a nice area.

The most important thing to know is that it is *expensive* there.   As in, we just sold our 1200 sq. ft. condo (PIB) for $700K.  The flipside is that salaries tend to be higher - Yahoo is a good employer - and so it makes the housing cost easier.  Although I'd guess a farm would be in the higher millions.

There are orchards, though, and property where you can keep horses.  Mostly, that's in Woodside or Portola Valley, which is a bit of a drive (anywhere from 20 minutes- one hour from Yahoo, depending on how far out you are).  For a property big enough to keep horses, expect to spend at least $1.5M.  Realtor.com is helpful.

I wouldn't worry about fitting in, though.  Silicon Valley is an eclectic area where billionaires cruise around in torn jeans and sweatshirts.  It's not a big city, like San Francisco, and I always thought it was very laid back.
