Cincinnati OH Nestie that may be relocating to NOLA: Need housing advice

Hello all!

DH and I came to your amazing city 2 weeks ago for our honeymoon and I fell in love with it all over again. I had been down twice before, once to help out after Katrina and once last fall to visit with a few friends at Loyola.

DH applied with the New Orleans police department while we were there. He has applications in all over up here, but most depts. are on a hiring freeze.

He does his interviews and testing the second week of December, but we are a little nervous. I have been checking out rent figures in NO and they are WAY HIGHER than what we are used to up here (our 1B/1B apt is $450/month including utlities). Also, I was looking at prices for small houses and could find NONE for under 150K, that would buy a whole lot of house up this way.

Needless to say I have a few questions and am freaking out:

1. Are there any other places around NO that are hiring?

2. Are there any surrounding areas where rent isn't so expensive?

3. Are there any surrounding areas where houses are less expensive?

4. What is the general cost of living?

Thanks for all your help ladies, I really appreciate it!

  • Have you tried areas on the Northshore in St. Tammany Parish like Mandeville, Covington, Slidell, or Madisonville?  I have no idea if any of the police or sheriff departments are hiring though, but the cost of living is a little less up there.

When you ask if anyone is hiring, are you talking about only Police Departments or do you mean anywhere?
  • We live in Mandeville and we'd be in New Orleans right now if we didn't have kids in school.  We found rent to be comparable if not cheaper in places and with more culture surrounding it.  We are up here because of the private school expense that comes with living in Nola.

  • 1.  Are you talking about for police?  There is Jefferson Parish, St. Bernard, and St. Charles Parish that surround Orleans.  I don't know if they're hiring though.

2 & 3.  The Westbank of the Mississippi River isn't as expensive.  I live in Harvey and there are "starter homes" here under 150K.  Cities over here are Gretna, Terrytown, Harvey, Marrero, and Westwego.  The westbank is about 45 minutes closer to New Orleans than the Northshore.  Yes, the westbank isn't as nice, but it's only 15 minutes away from NO.
