Is there a hospital oversight board?

My mom wants to lodge a complaint/resolve an issue about the care she received in a hosptial, but she not sure who to send it to.  Anyone know if there is a hospital oversight board in NH?

Re: Is there a hospital oversight board?

  • Mmm, I'm pretty sure that she would need to go to the hospital directly. Each hospital has individual boards that govern it, but I'm not aware of a state-wide oversight board for patient care.

She's already gone to the complaint department of the hospital.  She isn't satisfied with their response, but doesn't want to sue over the issue.
  • Haha,  I thought I  clicked on NJ board,  but  figured I'd  answer you  anyway.  First you  speak  with the  nurse manager,   but this  would  primarily  be  done  during the stay. from there go up  the chain of command. The nursing supervisor,  if no response then the  president/ ceo of the  hospital.   If  no response  from them,  you could  contact NH  department of health and human  services. I guess the  path you  would  take  depends on the reason  for the complaint.
  • I just called my mother-in-law, who works for the Department of Health & Human Services (but I got her voicemail).

I know that her department deals with complaints & accreditation in the health care field, like nursing homes & such.  I can't remember if hospitals are included or not.

I'm seeing her later this evening for ice cream & will try to remember to ask her.  If it's not her department, I bet she'd know whose it is.

  • Ok, just talked to my mother-in-law.

Her department does deal with hospital complaints.

She said just to call her (Leta) at 271-3021 and she will forward the call onto Sheila, who is in charge of taking those complaints.  Good Luck!
