Traditional Kentucky Derby foods?

Hi ladies- my DH and I are hosting a Kentucky Derby party this year (in MD).  Obviously, mint juleps are on the menu :)  Can you give me any other ideas to make our party authentic?  Thanks so much!
The day I left was just my beginning.

Re: Traditional Kentucky Derby foods?

  • KY derby pie - it's a pecan pie with choc chips and sometimes bourbon.  You can find a ton of recipes on-line.

Hot Brown, Bourgoo (it's a specialty stew)

    Sweet tea

You can go with other Southern foods - like Pimento cheese, tomato and cucumber sandwiches.

Have fun - remember to require hats for the ladies!!!

  • yes, derby pie.  hot browns, which you could make appetizer style/size - kind of like bruchetta, but w/ ham, cheese and bacon instead.  fried green tomatoes???  definitely have them wear hats and some bring gambling $.  have fun!
  • ditto to derby pie and hot browns.
  • Ditto to all above...you definitely need Derby pie.  Hot browns are awesome, but I'm not sure they are good for a Derby party (they aren't really Derby related, just a local food, and they're kind of messy), basically it's an open faced sandwich made with turkey (not ham), tomato, bacon, and mornay sauce.  I think little finger sandwiches of either pimento cheese or benedictine (another local creation - it's a cucumber spread, look on internet for recipes) would be good.  Burgoo would be good as well.

Truly there are no "derby" foods other than Derby Pie - Derby is really all about the drinking!!
